The Gloucester rugby team has secured the services of Dian Bleuler, a loosehead prop previously part of the South Africa U20 squad, from the Sharks, a team in the United Rugby Championship. This transfer is effective immediately.
George Skivington, the coach of Gloucester, is currently navigating a period where several players are sidelined due to injuries, impacting various positions within the team. The prop positions are particularly affected. Val Rapava-Ruskin, a loosehead, is managing a persistent knee problem, while Jamal Ford-Robinson, a versatile player, had knee surgery during the off-season.
Bleuler, a 26-year-old loosehead from the Sharks, is expected to provide support in the No.1 jersey. This addition comes after a challenging start to the season for Gloucester, who are currently among the teams without a win in the Gallagher PREM.
The Sharks have also faced difficulties this season, with only one draw against the Dragons amidst significant losses to Glasgow Warriors and Leinster in the initial rounds of the competition.
Bleuler played in 22 matches for the Sharks after joining them in Durban from the Stormers in 2022. He also spent a portion of the previous season on loan with Munster, participating in seven games during that period.
The prop will arrive in the West Country having played one game this season, featuring for 23 minutes off the bench in the URC’s first round against Glasgow.
Gloucester are scheduled to play Bristol Bears on Friday night, an opportunity for the South African player to potentially make his debut for the team.
“We have experienced a number of injuries,” said Skivington, the director of rugby. “While we anticipate the return of some players in the coming weeks, it is beneficial to have Dian join us now to fill the void and add to the team’s depth in the long run.
“His strength lies in the set-piece, and he also demonstrates mobility and dynamism around the field, aligning with our style of play.
“We are all excited to integrate him into the squad and involve him in the upcoming matches.”
