Boks coach Tony Brown surprised by ABs’ position

Distinguished former All Black first five-eighth and current Springbok assistant coach Tony Brown conveyed his astonishment regarding the dismissal of Scott Robertson.
Robertson, widely recognized by his nickname ‘Razor’, was let go by New Zealand Rugby following their December year-end assessment, and Brown anticipates his successor will be announced ‘at some point this week’.
He further stated that irrespective of the individual chosen as their next head coach, the All Blacks are set to challenge the Springboks fiercely this year.
Brown delivered these remarks during an extensive media conference, which featured South African Rugby Union CEO Rian Oberholzer, Springbok head coach Rassie Erasmus, and his complete coaching staff.

“Clearly, given how events unfolded, it was quite unexpected that New Zealand Rugby decided to make a change,” Brown remarked.

“They evidently perceived it as a necessary step.”

Among the potential All Black candidates, Brown’s close associate, former Japan head coach Jamie Joseph, is prominently featured on the ‘shortlist’, with Dave Rennie, currently based in Japan, being the alternative leading contender.

“I believe they are considering appointing a coach at some point this week,” Brown commented.

“My knowledge on the matter is no greater than yours, but it’s clearly a choice between Dave Rennie and Jamie Joseph,” he appended.

“Both are excellent coaches, possessing considerable experience on the international stage.”

He expressed confidence that the significant alteration in staff would not lessen the challenge the All Blacks present to the reigning world champion Springboks in the upcoming four-Test ‘Greatest Rivalry’ series this year.

“Regardless of who is appointed, I can assure you the All Blacks will perform exceptionally well this year,” he affirmed.

Brown unequivocally stated he would not be defecting from the Springboks to the All Blacks, even if Joseph secures the position.

The New Zealander has received an offer to extend his agreement in South Africa past the 2027 World Cup, but he has yet to consider it.

“My immediate plan is to dedicate myself completely to South Africa for the next two years until after the World Cup, and then whatever happens, happens.

“Indeed, I haven’t genuinely contemplated my plans following the World Cup.”
