The Denver Broncos operated without a key member during this week’s practice sessions, as standout outside linebacker Nik Bonitto, a second-team All-Pro selection, was in recovery following a medical procedure to address a bone spur on his foot. Head Coach Sean Payton shared during his post-practice media briefing on Thursday that Bonitto is expected to be back on the field in the coming week and may participate in the preseason match against the Saints scheduled for August 23.
Should Bonitto return to practice before the Broncos’ last preseason game, he would have roughly three weeks to prepare before the commencement of the regular season.
“He experienced a minor spur on the upper part of his foot,” Payton commented. “We addressed it proactively, anticipating his absence this week. His performance has been outstanding. The reason for his absence is solely due to this minor bone spur situated uniquely on the top of his foot. It doesn’t bear weight. He proceeded with the procedure. I believe it involved three stitches.”

The recuperation period following bone spur removal surgery can differ significantly, largely influenced by the spur’s specific location. Based on Payton’s statements, Bonitto’s procedure was relatively non-invasive, implying a quicker recovery than the typical weeks or months often associated with such surgeries.
Ensuring Bonitto’s return to practice, allowing him to prepare adequately for the season’s start, is vital for the Broncos, who demonstrated considerable defensive improvement last season. Bonitto’s impactful performance played a crucial role in this transformation, with the team improving from 27th to third in points allowed between 2023 and 2024.
Bonitto excelled during his second year under Coach Payton and his third year overall with the Broncos. He attained personal bests in all key statistical categories, including 48 tackles, 13.5 sacks, 16 tackles for a loss, two forced fumbles, one fumble recovery, three passes defended, one interception, and two defensive touchdowns. His sack record marked the first instance of a Broncos player achieving double-digit sacks since Von Miller and Bradley Chubb accomplished this feat in 2018.
Last year proved to be an exceptional season for Bonitto, establishing him as a consistent starter and highlighting his ongoing progress in his third year. The former second-round draft pick from Oklahoma resembled his collegiate performance, where he twice received All-America honors. His standout season led to his inaugural Pro Bowl selection.
