An unexpected contender has emerged as a potential opponent for Amanda Nunes: Jake Paul’s renowned teammate and long-reigning boxing champion, Amanda Serrano.
UFC 324 faced a significant setback less than two weeks before the event as UFC women’s bantamweight title holder Kayla Harrison was compelled to withdraw from her scheduled bout against Amanda Nunes due to an injury.
Harrison, who claimed the UFC women’s bantamweight championship at UFC 316, sustained a neck injury during her training camp and is scheduled for surgery soon. She is anticipated to be out of action for approximately six months before receiving medical clearance to compete again.
At this moment, it is uncertain whether Nunes will remain on the fight card or be sidelined herself following Harrison’s departure. Top-ranked contender Norma Dumont recently issued a challenge for a last-minute fight at UFC 324.
However, another prominent figure, world boxing champion Amanda Serrano, wishes to resume her three-fight MMA career on short notice against the greatest fighter of all time.
Amanda Serrano Addresses Amanda Nunes and UFC Prior to UFC 324
In a recent social media post, Serrano conveyed a message to Nunes and the UFC management ahead of UFC 324.
“Should the UFC and Amanda Nunes be considering a substitute opponent, I would gladly accept the challenge since I am still prepared to fight,” Serrano shared on Wednesday.
“My best wishes for the champion’s full recovery.”
Serrano’s professional mixed martial arts career commenced in April 2018, resulting in a draw against Corina Herrera. Subsequently, she secured consecutive submission wins in 2018 and 2021, and her most recent cage appearance was at iKON FC 7.
Serrano is widely recognized as among the most accomplished female boxers ever, having recently triumphed over Reina Tellez on January 3rd to defend her featherweight championships. This victory ended a two-bout losing streak against Katie Taylor.
Currently, the UFC’s intentions for Nunes are undisclosed, as is the prospect of Serrano joining the promotion. Nevertheless, credit is due to Serrano for her readiness to confront the top competitor despite challenging circumstances.
