A record of 44 wins and 60 losses hasn’t stopped the Atlanta Braves from making acquisitions before MLB’s trade deadline.
The Braves revealed on Sunday that they’ve obtained right-handed pitcher Erick Fedde from the St. Louis Cardinals in return for a future player or financial compensation.
The transaction bolsters pitching resources for a starting rotation significantly impacted by injuries. As of Sunday’s trade, Chris Sale (rib fracture), Reynaldo López (shoulder inflammation), Spencer Schwellenbach (elbow fracture), Grant Holmes (elbow inflammation) and AJ Smith-Shawver (UCL tear) were all placed on the 60-day injured list.

Smith-Shawver had Tommy John surgery, ending his season. To create space for Fedde on the roster, the Braves transferred Holmes to the 60-day IL.
Fedde, 32, is currently in his eighth MLB season. He’s started in 20 games for the Cardinals in 2025, posting a 5.22 ERA and a 1.505 WHIP. Although not an elite starter, he fulfills the role of a starting pitcher, a position the Braves urgently need filled due to numerous long-term injuries within their rotation.
The Braves started Sunday in fourth position in the NL East, trailing the leading New York Mets by 16.5 games. They were 12 games behind the San Diego Padres for the last wild-card spot in the National League.
Their chances of making the playoffs appear limited. However, the Braves must have pitchers available for the rest of the season, and acquiring Fedde helps meet that requirement.
