Bregman Homers in Houston Return, Astros Beat Red Sox

The contest on Monday evening between the Boston Red Sox and Houston Astros at Daikin Park — ultimately a 7-6 victory for the Astros playing at home — was not just an important clash between franchises hoping to contend in the American League. It also represented the return of three figures vital to the Astros’ story, encompassing their history, their current state, and their future prospects.

Specifically, Carlos Correa was appearing at the Astros’ home field for the first time since being traded from the Twins back to the organization where he spent the initial seven years of his Major League Baseball tenure, a transaction that occurred prior to the trade deadline. Additionally, Alex Bregman was making his initial journey back to Houston following his signing of a free-agent agreement with the Red Sox during the recent offseason. Similar to Correa, Bregman had been an Astros mainstay before opting to explore opportunities elsewhere via free agency. Lastly, Monday’s game was significant as it marked the return of Houston’s starting pitcher Cristian Javier following Tommy John surgery. This game represented Javier’s first start in approximately 15 months.

“I genuinely doubted I would have the opportunity to wear this uniform again,” Correa stated before the game. He had previously signed with the Twins before the 2022 season. “Being able to do this once more in front of the Houston fans is a blessing. We are extremely pleased, to put it mildly. My entire family is exceptionally excited.”

Regarding Bregman, who boasts two Astros World Series titles compared to Correa’s one, he conveyed to reporters that he most eagerly anticipated seeing familiar individuals during his return to Houston. “Just reconnecting with the players, the stadium staff, and the supporters, along with the opportunity to play baseball,” he remarked. “I’m excited to go out there, compete alongside the team, and strive for victories.”

Following a pre-game recognition and a standing ovation upon his initial plate appearance, Bregman swiftly transformed his first appearance in Houston as a visiting player into a noteworthy event:

That home run, Bregman’s 15th of the current season across 74 games, situated him within a rather exclusive, albeit narrowly defined, group:

Later, he connected for a single on an 0-2 count, and Bregman’s current slash line stands at .301/.382/.541 for the year.

However, the majority of the evening was dominated by Bregman’s former team. Correa received a celebratory welcome during his initial plate appearance upon his return to Houston:

Despite striking out looking during that initial at-bat, Correa later secured an RBI single. He has now registered a hit in nine consecutive games for Houston, and since the trade, his batting average is .390/.457/.585. In addition to his offensive output, Correa has taken on the role of third baseman for the first time in his professional career. This adjustment has allowed the Astros to compensate for the injured Isaac Paredes while simultaneously maintaining All-Star and former Gold Glove recipient Jeremy Peña at shortstop.

Concerning Javier, his initial start after the extended break proved remarkably successful, particularly considering the typical challenges faced by pitchers recovering from Tommy John surgery and the fact that he was facing one of the most potent offenses in Major League Baseball. The statistics from his Monday start are as follows:

Out of his total of 85 pitches delivered during the evening, 53 were categorized as strikes. Javier was credited with securing a win for the first occasion since May 16 of the previous year. Javier, currently 28 years old, had consistently been a reliable presence within the Houston pitching rotation for several seasons leading up to his elbow injury. He is expected to be a significant contributor as the season progresses. Monday’s performance underscored this expectation.

The Astros’ offensive lineup managed to score five runs against Garrett Crochet, the opposing pitcher and a contender for the AL Cy Young Award. This run total matches the highest number of runs Crochet has conceded in a single start this season. Additionally, Ramón Urías, another player acquired by Houston near the trade deadline, recorded three hits, including his first home run as a member of the Astros.

The Red Sox mounted a late rally, scoring four runs in the seventh inning. However, they were ultimately contained. This result signifies that the Astros now hold a one-game advantage over the Mariners in the standings for the top spot in the AL West Division. Simultaneously, the Red Sox have experienced three consecutive losses. They continue to occupy the second wild card position in the American League and trail the Blue Jays by 4 ½ games in the AL East Division.
