BOSTON — According to Alex Bregman, a stint in the minor leagues might not be necessary before he rejoins the Boston Red Sox lineup; he anticipates being back before the All-Star break.
The two-time All-Star third baseman, absent since May 24 due to a strained right quad, indicated the possibility of his return occurring by the week’s end.
“Looking at a pretty quick return,” Bregman commented on Monday night following Boston’s 9-3 victory over the Rockies. “It’s either going to be the end of this week or the first game after the break. I’m hoping for the end of this week.”
Boston’s three-game series against Colorado concludes on Wednesday. Following that, they will host Tampa Bay for a four-game series from Thursday to Sunday, wrapping up their first-half schedule.
Boston held significant expectations for Bregman, 31, upon signing him as a free agent during the offseason for $120 million over three years. Before his injury, he had an impressive start to the season, batting .299 with 11 home runs and 35 RBIs. However, Monday marked his 40th game on the sidelines.
The injury is similar to a left quad strain he experienced in 2021 with Houston, which kept him out for 58 games. Unlike that prior injury, Bregman hopes to return to play without needing time in the minors.
However, he noted that the final decision will be made after consulting with the medical and training staff.
“We’re still planning to discuss it as a group,” Bregman said. “I believe we will have another discussion (on Tuesday). But I feel capable of playing and getting ready to go.”
The timing coincides with Bregman’s selection to his third All-Star team on Sunday as a reserve. Nevertheless, he believes his participation is unlikely.
Although he might attend and bring his son to the Home Run Derby, he will dedicate the break to maintaining his fitness, preparing for the season’s second half.
“My goal is to be back playing by the end of this week,” he stated, “and use the All-Star break to continue building up, working on my leg, and ensuring we progress correctly.”
