Strategic Risk established a decisive lead early in the final straightaway, effortlessly securing a victory by four and a half lengths in the Smarty Jones Stakes, valued at $250,000, on January 3rd at Oaklawn Park.
Following its triumph on Saturday in the one-sixteenth-mile stakes event designed for three-year-old thoroughbreds, Strategic Risk earned 10 qualifying points for the Road to the Kentucky Derby, sponsored by Woodford Reserve. Its stable companion, Silent Tactic, placed second, thereby accumulating five qualifying points.
Both the first and second-place finishers are under the ownership of John Oxley and receive training from Mark Casse. This result signifies Casse’s re-engagement with the Kentucky Derby pathway at Oaklawn Park, having previously guided Sandman to success in the Grade 1 Arkansas Derby during the preceding year. Oxley achieved a Kentucky Derby win in 2001 with Monarchos.
The underdog Scar Ship set the pace for the competitors, completing the first quarter-mile in 24.48 seconds and the half-mile in 49.72 seconds, while Strategic Risk pursued in second position with jockey Javier Castellano aboard. Strategic Risk subsequently initiated a prolonged surge entering the far turn, enabling it to capture the lead close to the quarter pole and establish a distinct advantage as they entered the home straight.
After the first two placers, Baytown Dreamer, an outsider, secured third place (earning three points), Sleepingonfreedom came in fourth (gaining two points), and Rancho Santa Fe finished fifth (receiving one point). Universe, the 2.30-1 favorite following a second-place performance in the Grade 2 Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes at Churchill Downs, had a slow start and remained out of contention, ultimately finishing seventh among the eight participants.
This win marked Strategic Risk’s initial stakes triumph when competing against an unrestricted field, having concluded its two-year-old campaign with an impressive nine-length victory against fellow Florida-bred horses in the $300,000 FTBOA Florida Sire In Reality Stakes on November 29th at Gulfstream Park. Through its win on Saturday, the progeny of Noble Bird achieved its second consecutive victory in races covering two turns on a dirt surface.
