Harriet Dart of Great Britain secured her maiden WTA Tour singles crown after defeating rapidly rising Austrian teenage talent Lilli Tagger in the championship match at the Guangzhou Open.
Following her hard-fought 4-6 6-3 6-4 triumph in a high-stakes encounter, the 30-year-old Dart was overcome with emotion.
This determined victory marked the culmination of an incredible journey for Dart, who navigated through the qualification rounds to claim the trophy at the WTA 250 tournament.
“It feels surreal to sit here as the champion after starting out in qualifying—it truly feels unbelievable,” Dart stated to BBC Sport.
“It has been an extraordinary week, and I take immense pride in what I’ve accomplished.”
Ranked world number 115, the British fifth-ranked player saw her advantage in the final set erased twice by the 18-year-old Tagger.
However, Dart secured a crucial third break to lead 4-3 before holding her service game to stand just one game away from victory.
During the ninth game, with Tagger (world number 53) serving, Dart earned two match points—missing the second by driving an easy short ball into the net—before ultimately regaining her composure to seal the biggest win of her career.
She converted her third match point with an unreturnable serve, dropping to the court in jubilation before embracing her team.
Beyond capturing the silverware, Dart’s standout week will be rewarded with a return to the top 100 in the global rankings.
Consequently, she will gain direct entry into the main draw of the Australian Open when the year’s first Grand Slam commences in January.
Throughout the tournament, Dart’s success was anchored by her grit and her knack for rallying back from trailing situations.
Her comeback against Tagger, the 2025 French Open junior champion, marked the fourth occasion in seven matches this week where she triumphed after dropping the opening set.
“This week proves that even when I’m trailing—and people count me out—I still possess the strength to fight back,” Dart noted.
“Today’s contest was incredibly demanding. I have absolute faith that Lilli will capture numerous titles in the future. Emerging victorious after a week like this is deeply meaningful to me.”
This championship serves as a fitting payoff for an impressive second half of the year, during which Dart displayed consistent ball-striking and steadily built up her self-belief.
Although Dart achieved a career-best ranking of 70th in 2024 after reaching the third round at Wimbledon and the second round of the US Open, she spent much of the subsequent two seasons outside the top 100.
Her partnership with former Wimbledon champion Marion Bartoli has proven pivotal to her career resurgence.
Since Wimbledon, Dart has claimed victory in 19 out of 24 main-tour hard-court matches, bringing her overall WTA Tour record this year to 23 wins in 34 contests—the highest win percentage of her career.
“Facing you on the court today wasn’t easy—you’ve had an incredible season,” remarked Tagger to Dart, after a tournament run that included a victory over seven-time Grand Slam winner Venus Williams.
