The San Francisco 49ers will proceed in Week 3 without their primary quarterback, Brock Purdy. Although he participated in a few limited training sessions this week, sources indicate that Purdy will not be available for Sunday’s contest against the Arizona Cardinals, as reported by NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.
However, it appears Purdy’s absence will be brief. Following a positive recovery period, there’s a possibility Purdy could return in Week 4, provided his condition doesn’t worsen.
The 25-year-old Purdy is currently managing two distinct ailments: a strained left shoulder and a case of turf toe. These injuries occurred during the team’s Week 1 victory over the Seattle Seahawks, in which he passed for 277 yards and recorded two touchdowns.
With Purdy unavailable in Week 2, Mac Jones, formerly a first-round selection for the New England Patriots, took the starting position. Jones performed admirably against the New Orleans Saints, throwing for three touchdowns. He’ll aim for similar achievement against the Cardinals in Week 3.
Following three seasons with the Patriots, Jones played the 2024 season with the Jacksonville Jaguars before joining the 49ers during the offseason.
When in good health, Purdy has demonstrated substantial promise as a starting quarterback. In his second season, Purdy threw 31 touchdowns, earning him his first Pro Bowl selection and a fourth-place ranking in the MVP voting.
Last season saw a decline in performance, with Purdy managing just 20 touchdowns across 15 games. The 49ers faced challenges with offensive injuries, potentially affecting his statistics.
Despite the reduced production, Purdy secured a significant five-year contract extension with the 49ers in May, valued at $265 million. He is set to resume his starting role as soon as he is fit to play.
The 49ers are aiming to recover from their 6-11 record last season. The team has begun strongly this season, with a perfect 2-0 record heading into Sunday’s game.
