Broncos’ Wil Lutz Signs 3-Year Contract Extension

Wil Lutz has been a kicking specialist under Sean Payton’s guidance for a considerable duration. Indications suggest this partnership will persist for several additional seasons.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Denver Broncos’ placekicker has consented to a three-year contract extension, securing his position with the team until the conclusion of the 2028 season. Prior to this agreement, Lutz was approaching free agency with the Broncos.

The extension materializes merely five days following Lutz’s flawless performance of converting all five field goal attempts and a point-after attempt in a 22-19 victory against the Kansas City Chiefs, marking the most recent significant triumph for the 9-2 Broncos. With Payton at the helm, Denver has surpassed anticipations this season, an achievement that would have been challenging without a top-tier kicker.

Throughout the current season, Lutz has successfully executed 17 out of 20 field goal attempts. His misses originated from distances of 42, 51, and 59 yards. Notably, the 51-yard attempt was also blocked.

Lutz’s association with Payton traces back to his inaugural year in the NFL with the New Orleans Saints in 2016. He served as the team’s kicker for five seasons under Payton’s direction, later reuniting with him through a trade when Payton assumed leadership of the Broncos in 2023.

According to Pro Football Reference data, the 31-year-old Lutz holds the 16th position in NFL history regarding field-goal percentage. He is an integral component of the group of highly precise kickers that have influenced the league’s scoring dynamics this season.
