Bruno: Anfield Crowd Helped Man United Win

According to Bruno Fernandes, Manchester United’s victory at Anfield, their first since January 2016, was partly due to Liverpool fans’ evident dissatisfaction with their own team during the initial 45 minutes, stemming from their inability to exert sufficient pressure on Ruben Amorim’s squad.

Harry Maguire’s headed goal in the 84th minute secured a 2-1 victory for United, after Cody Gakpo had earlier equalized following Bryan Mbeumo’s early goal in the second minute for the visiting team. United’s triumph marked Amorim’s first instance of consecutive league victories since his arrival from Sporting CP last November and also condemned Liverpool to their fourth consecutive defeat across all competitions.

Liverpool’s last experience of losing five consecutive matches was in September 1953. Consequently, Arne Slot’s team will travel to Eintracht Frankfurt for Wednesday’s Champions League encounter, aiming to prevent a defeat that would match their worst losing streak in 72 years.

United captain Fernandes suggested that the home fans’ anxiety played a role in his team’s victory against Liverpool.

“During the first 10 minutes, we anticipated that they [Liverpool] would attempt to initiate a very strong start to the game,” Fernandes told Sky Sports. “Furthermore, in the first half, we noticed that they experienced pressure when in possession of the ball. The fans were creating a challenging environment for them, urging them to play more quickly, even booing them.”

“Our intention was to decelerate their game, recognizing that this would create significant spaces around the midfield area. In the second half, we might have been able to maintain possession a bit more effectively.”

“We recognize the significance of these rivalries for the fans and the club. Our intention was to secure a win, as it has been a considerable period since the club last achieved a victory at Anfield.”

“It is a very important result, and I am extremely pleased to have achieved it today.”

United’s most recent instance of consecutive league victories within the same season occurred towards the conclusion of the 2023-24 campaign, and Maguire commented after the game: “It’s quite embarrassing, really.”

“It is not a statistic that we should even be discussing, as it is quite embarrassing to possess such a record.”

“Now that we have addressed that, our focus shifts to attempting to secure a third consecutive victory on Saturday against Brighton, as we need to begin establishing greater consistency.”

“In the past three or four years, we might have delivered a performance like this only to falter in the subsequent game.”

“We have established a benchmark. There are numerous areas where we can improve. We were under pressure and defending for approximately the final 30 minutes.”

“We will conduct an analysis. The manager aims for perfection, so I am confident that he will want us to perform better than we did in the second half. We demonstrated great determination, strong spirit, and secured a significant victory, but we must continue to strive for improvement.”

United’s victory reduces the gap to two points behind fourth-placed Liverpool and enhances the prospects of Amorim’s team contending for Champions League qualification this season. However, when questioned about whether United are now considered Champions League contenders, Amorim suggested that it is premature to place his team in that category.

“I would prefer you to maintain the current narrative so that I do not raise the expectations,” Amorim told reporters. “Our objective is to strive for three consecutive victories and then disregard discussions about the top four or top six positions.”

“We have previously stated our desire to participate in European competition. This result does not alter anything; we remain the same team as we were 90 minutes ago.”

“I am uncertain whether we will display the same spirit that we exhibit every day, but I anticipate that we will secure numerous victories. To achieve that, we must demonstrate action.”

“However, securing a victory is undoubtedly crucial. I do not have many victories in Manchester. Achieving back-to-back wins is significant, and every detail of this game, the spirit displayed during challenging moments, and the control we exhibited, all the small aspects were executed perfectly. Let us strive to replicate that next week.”

“This victory holds great significance for our fans. They experienced frustration against Grimsby and Brentford, but today they witnessed a different team.”
