Burrage Wins Qualifying Match

Jodie Burrage of Great Britain conceded a mere four games as she started her attempt to qualify for the US Open’s primary competition.

Burrage, aged 26, secured eight consecutive games to finish with a 6-4, 6-0 win against Patricia Maria Tig from Romania during the opening qualifying round in New York.

The world’s 149th-ranked player, aiming to participate in the US Open main event for the second occasion, is set to compete against the 18th-seeded Arantxa Rus in her next match.

Burrage is accompanied in the second qualifying round by Billy Harris, who recovered from a set down to overcome James Kent Trotter of Japan 3-6, 6-1, 6-2, though Johannus Monday was defeated 7-5, 6-3 by Harold Mayot of France.

Dan Evans and Jay Clarke are also slated to commence their participation on Monday at Flushing Meadows.

Competitors need to triumph in three qualifying matches to proceed to the main singles brackets for the tournament, which gets underway on Sunday.

Jack Draper, Cameron Norrie, and Jacob Fearnley have secured automatic entry into the men’s singles, while Emma Raducanu, Katie Boulter, and Sonay Kartal are in the women’s.
