A critical matchup took place on Sunday afternoon between the Atlanta Dream and the Indiana Fever, who were separated by a mere half-game in the postseason standings with a mere ten contests remaining on their regular-season schedules.
This potential postseason preview absolutely delivered on expectations, requiring an extra period to determine the victor. In the end, the Fever secured a tight 95-91 victory, propelled by Caitlin Clark’s stellar performance of 26 points and nine assists. With this win, Indiana evened up their seasonal series against Atlanta at 2-2, preventing the Dream from securing a crucial head-to-head tiebreaking advantage.
This triumph marks the beginning of a five-game road stretch for Indiana. Although the Fever have prioritized managing their key players’ minutes throughout the season, they now face a grueling slate of five matchups over the span of eight days, kicked off by Sunday’s victory against Atlanta.
The Dream closed out the second quarter with a dominant 17-4 surge to capture a 44-40 advantage at the break. Allisha Gray paced her team with 17 points by halftime, while none of her teammates surpassed seven. Gray ultimately registered a career-best 32 points by the final whistle, though her outstanding performance fell short of securing a victory for Atlanta.
Atlanta squandered a golden opportunity to seal the game in regulation as the clock wound down. Rhyne Howard’s shot from beyond the arc missed, followed by an unsuccessful point-blank attempt from Angel Reese, and a final buzzer-beating try by Naz Hillmon that also failed to drop, pushing the contest into overtime.
The overtime period proved to be just as competitive and closely contested as the previous four quarters. With only 23 seconds remaining in OT, Indiana maintained a three-point cushion. Kelsey Mitchell converted a driving layup, which padded the Fever’s lead and pushed her personal scoring tally to 20 points for the night, marking her 19th consecutive game reaching that milestone.
Moments later, Howard drew a foul while attempting a three-pointer and calmly sunk all three of her free throws, slicing the Dream’s deficit to just two points with 10.8 seconds on the clock.
Sent to the stripe after a quick foul, Clark knocked down both free throws to extend the Fever’s lead to four. Atlanta’s desperate attempt at a long-range three fell short, allowing Clark to secure the rebound and launch the ball to the opposite side of the floor as the final buzzer sounded.
Fever center Aliyah Boston put up a strong double-double performance, contributing 18 points and grabbing 14 boards.
While the defense concentrated heavily on Clark, Mitchell, and Boston, Makayla Timpson quietly excelled, racking up a career-best 20 points, including several critical buckets during the extra period.
Gray anchored Atlanta’s efforts, supplementing her scoring with seven boards and five assists. Meanwhile, Reese recorded another double-double of her own, registering 15 points and 14 rebounds.
This victory improves Indiana’s record to 23-12 for the year. The Fever remain in fourth place in the WNBA table, holding onto home-court seeding with nine matchups left on their schedule. Indiana is set to continue their road trip on Tuesday evening when they face off against the Toronto Tempo.
Conversely, Atlanta is preparing for a four-game road stretch that kicks off Tuesday night against the Las Vegas Aces. Although the Dream fell to 21-13, they managed to hold onto the fifth seed in the postseason race.
With ten games remaining for Atlanta, attention naturally shifts to their final stretch of the season, which features a back-to-back series against the New York Liberty—a pairing that could carry immense postseason significance.
