The Indiana Fever’s Caitlin Clark has remained off the court after experiencing a groin issue during their victory against the Connecticut Sun on July 15.
Since that instance, Clark has been undergoing rehabilitation for the subsequent injury that has sidelined her this year. She has participated in only 13 of the Fever’s 32 contests thus far.
With an upcoming nationally televised game against the Dallas Wings scheduled for Tuesday evening, and Clark’s status indicated as a “game-time decision” on the WNBA website, some anticipation arose about the potential return of the second-year guard.
However, Fever head coach Stephanie White clarified the situation to reporters on Monday.
Caitlin Clark has yet to resume practicing
While White acknowledged Clark’s behind-the-scenes progress, she affirmed that Clark is not yet prepared to engage in practice sessions with her teammates, let alone participate in a game.
“She’s been gradually increasing her full-court running with her entire body weight,” White explained. “The process involves starting with minimal exertion, then gradually building endurance to sustain longer periods of activity. She’s been capable of doing somewhat more on the court regarding her movements, but she hasn’t commenced practicing yet.”
Considering Clark’s challenges with quad and groin injuries this season, it is reasonable to assume that the Fever are exercising caution with her recovery.
Clark Expresses a Sense of “Responsibility” to Return
During this week’s broadcast of Sue Bird’s “Bird’s Eye View” podcast, Clark conveyed that she feels an obligation to rejoin the team on the court, both for her team and for the WNBA overall, given her contribution to the league’s growth.
“It’s challenging, because I definitely feel accountable to be out there and performing,” Clark shared with Bird.
“And it’s not that I believe there’s any risk of this diminishing. That’s not the case when individuals like LeBron or Steph are injured. [Fans] will always remain engaged,” Clark continued. “But you do aspire to play, to offer people something to celebrate or express enthusiasm about. People invest considerable time, resources, and financial resources to attend and watch you play. And it’s been encouraging to see individuals continue to support my teammates, whether they’re devoted to the Fever or simply fans of myself, they persist in showing up and offering support.”
Fever Maintaining Their Position
Indiana holds a 10-9 record this season without Clark and an overall record of 18-14 with eight games remaining. The Fever have also recently lost guards Sydney Colson and Aari McDonald for the season due to injuries.
There is anticipation that Clark will recover, hopefully soon.
“We recognize that this struggle is somewhat unique with (our) players absent from the lineup,” Fever star Natasha Howard posted on social media over the weekend. “All the effort they’ve dedicated throughout this season will not be forgotten. Regardless of the outcome, just recognize that we are committed to fighting until the end for Syd, CC & Ari. Looking forward to seeing you soon, CC.”
