Cal Raleigh’s Home Run Chase: Closing in on Griffey Jr.’s Mariners Record

Cal Raleigh’s remarkable 2025 season has resulted in him achieving the 50-home run milestone, establishing a new record for the most home runs in a single season by a catcher in Major League Baseball history. He also stands alone as the only MLB player to hit a minimum of 20 home runs from both sides of the plate within the same season.

Now, all eyes are on how much higher his final count will go. On Saturday, Raleigh added to his total with home run No. 52, a powerful shot that traveled 426 feet into right field, securing a 10-2 victory for his team against the Atlanta Braves.

Raleigh’s home run provided the finishing touch to the game and the victory, concluding a four-game losing streak, with two home runs from Julio Rodriguez playing a significant role.

His journey to this home run record started on the final day of March, when he hit his initial dinger of the season, and his power has only grown stronger ever since. Raleigh has had eight streaks of hitting home runs in consecutive games and has achieved nine games with multiple home runs this season.

Raleigh is nearing the American League record of 62 home runs, a mark set by New York Yankees player Aaron Judge in 2022. He is also getting closer to Mickey Mantle’s record of 54 home runs by a switch-hitter, achieved by the Yankees legend in 1961, and Ken Griffey Jr.’s Mariners record of 56 home runs, which “The Kid” reached twice, in 1997 and ’98.

As Raleigh approaches further achievements during his MVP-caliber season, we are keeping track of his significant 2025 home runs from the beginning of the season all the way through Game 162.

MARCH

Home runs hit: 1

March 31: Raleigh began his 2025 home run journey in the Mariners’ fifth game of the season, although they lost 9-6 to the Detroit Tigers. His 358-foot hit came six days after he agreed to a six-year, $105 million contract extension.

APRIL

Home runs hit: 9

April 11: The establishment of new records started early for Raleigh. During the Mariners’ 14th game, he launched his third of the season off Texas Rangers pitcher Chris Martin, setting a franchise record for career home runs by a catcher with his 96th.

May 27: Raleigh’s third game with multiple home runs this season brought his total to 19 for the year, setting a new MLB record for home runs by a catcher in a team’s first 53 games of the season. Both home runs came against Washington Nationals pitcher Mitchell Parker.

May 30: Raleigh became the first catcher in MLB history to reach 20 home runs before the end of May, adding another multi-home run performance that saw him knock in five runs during a 12-6 defeat to the Minnesota Twins.

JUNE

Home runs hit: 11

June 20: Raleigh continued his successful run from May into June, achieving double-digit home runs again and establishing a new MLB record for home runs by a catcher before the All-Star break with his 29th of the season at Wrigley Field against the Chicago Cubs.

June 21: Remaining at Wrigley the following day, Raleigh hit No. 30, becoming the first switch-hitter in MLB history to reach that milestone before the All-Star break, surpassing Mickey Mantle, José Ramírez, and Lance Berkman. He also became the first player since 2001 to hit 30 home runs within his team’s first 75 games; Barry Bonds and Luis Gonzalez achieved this feat that year.

JULY

Home runs hit: 9

July 14: Leading up to the All-Star Game held in Atlanta, Raleigh had accumulated 38 home runs. While in Georgia, he further displayed his power by becoming the first catcher to win the Home Run Derby, defeating Tampa Bay Rays third baseman Junior Caminero in the final round. Raleigh is the second Mariner to win the event, following Griffey, who achieved it three times. He also stands as the first switch-hitter to win the Derby outright, as Rubén Sierra, the only other switch-hitter to win, shared the title in 1998.

July 26: Almost two weeks after Raleigh’s Derby win, he reached No. 40, joining the ranks as the seventh catcher in MLB history to achieve a 40-homer season, alongside Salvador Perez, Johnny Bench, Javy López, Todd Hundley, Roy Campanella, and Mike Piazza. It marked the 133rd home run of Raleigh’s career, surpassing Ken Griffey Jr. for the most home runs by a Mariner within his first five MLB seasons.

AUGUST

Home runs hit: 8

Aug. 15: Home run No. 46 was launched during a victory over the New York Mets, which also saw Raleigh reach 100 RBI for the season. This matched his career high, previously set in 2024, and made Raleigh the first catcher since Mike Piazza in 1999 and 2000 to achieve 100 RBI in consecutive seasons while playing at least 50% of his games as a catcher.

Aug. 24: An 11-4 victory against the Athletics resulted in another game with multiple home runs from Raleigh, with him tying and then breaking the MLB record for home runs hit by a catcher in a single season when he hit Nos. 48 and 49, surpassing Salvador Perez.

Aug. 25: Raleigh was the first MLB player to reach 50 home runs this season, achieving this milestone with a first-inning home run during a win over the San Diego Padres. He is the only primary catcher to ever hit 50 home runs in a single season.

September

Home runs hit: 2

Sept. 2: Raleigh hit his first home run of September in a 6-5 loss against the Tampa Bay Rays. Rays starter Drew Rasmussen threw a 96 mph fastball high and over the middle of the plate, which Raleigh sent into the right-field stands at Steinbrenner Field.
