Cam Little’s Monster 70-Yard FG Stuns Preseason

Cam Little was on the verge of etching his name in the record books, needing just a few feet more, as he concluded the initial half of the Jacksonville Jaguars’ exhibition game with a type of kick never before witnessed in the NFL.

During the last play of the second quarter, the Jaguars’ placekicker successfully booted a 70-yard field goal, narrowing the Pittsburgh Steelers’ advantage to 14-9. Immediately, teammates swarmed him in celebration prior to their departure for the locker room.

“Unbelievable, they’ve got a chance,” exclaimed commentator Bucky Brooks as the ball soared through the uprights.

The current NFL record for the longest field goal is held by former Baltimore Ravens kicker Justin Tucker, who achieved a 66-yard kick against the Detroit Lions back in 2021. Little’s attempt surpassed that distance by four yards, but it won’t be officially recognized due to its occurrence in a preseason game.

Nevertheless, Little should be regarded as a kicker worth monitoring this season. The Jaguars may now act according to his potential, having demonstrated his capabilities. There may be a competition to surpass Tucker’s record, particularly from Dallas Cowboys kicker Brandon Aubrey, who currently has the second-longest field goal in NFL history at 65 yards and managed a 66-yarder during last year’s preseason.

Although the kick isn’t recognized by the NFL, it appears to be the longest achieved in any known football match. The previous best was at the collegiate level, when Ove Johansson of Abilene Christian successfully made a 69-yarder in 1976.

The Jaguars selected Little in the sixth round of the 2024 NFL Draft. He had a solid rookie season last year, converting 27 of 29 field goal attempts, with a long of 59 yards. He also maintained a perfect record on 27 extra point attempts and managed a touchback on 85.5% of kickoffs.

Prior to his NFL career, Little was among the top-rated kickers, receiving first-team All-SEC recognition at Arkansas. He was the third kicker chosen in the draft at the 212th overall position, following Will Reichard (Minnesota Vikings, 203rd overall) and Joshua Karty (Los Angeles Rams, 209th overall).
