Following a concerning occurrence at the UFC 324 weigh-in, bantamweight contender Cameron Smotherman of the UFC issued a statement to his supporters.
After a multi-week pause, devotees of the UFC are mere hours from witnessing the organization’s return this Saturday at UFC 324. The event’s main attraction features an interim lightweight championship bout pitting popular competitors Justin Gaethje against Paddy Pimblett.
Ahead of the much-anticipated contests, all fighters scheduled for the card were slated to hit the scales on Friday morning to officially confirm their participation. Notably, Deiveson Figueiredo and Alex Perez failed to make weight, incurring a 25% deduction from their fight earnings.
However, it was the weigh-in presence of bantamweight hopeful Cameron Smotherman that generated considerable discussion amongst spectators, analysts, and other combatants.
Having successfully registered his weight at 135.5 lbs for his bantamweight encounter against Ricky Turcios, Smotherman collapsed shortly after stepping off the platform, striking the ground with his face. He was subsequently assisted away by members of his team and UFC medical personnel for immediate care and preliminary assessments.
Fortunately, Smotherman’s health status is stable, and he will not participate in his scheduled fight this weekend versus Turcios, as the UFC hierarchy opted to call off the contest.

“Naturally, I’ve received numerous messages, and I truly value everyone’s sincere worries regarding my well-being,” Smotherman stated.
“I’m perfectly fine; everything is alright. I’m not fully certain about the cause. I’ve noticed many online suggesting ‘drastic weight reduction’ and similar comments – but I honestly didn’t shed significant weight for this bout. I was already quite light, and throughout this week, my weight reduction was minimal. I still don’t know exactly what occurred, and I am scheduled for further examinations and procedures in the upcoming weeks to ascertain the root cause.
“To all those speculating that I underwent an extreme cut, my weight loss was, in fact, exceedingly minor,” Smotherman proceeded to clarify. “I remain unsure of the incident’s specifics, but I am grateful for everyone’s concern. I am entirely fine, and I anticipate a speedy return. I extend my apologies to my scheduled adversary.”
Smotherman arrived at UFC 324 hoping to end a streak of two consecutive losses. Presently, it remains unknown whether the UFC intends to re-book Smotherman against Turcios or will opt for different fight pairings.
