Cameron Young Wins Wyndham Championship for First PGA Tour Victory

It seemed inevitable that Cameron Young would eventually triumph on the PGA Tour.

Despite consistently contending recently, he left no room for doubt at Sedgefield Country Club on Sunday.

Young, having once established a significant eight-shot advantage, cruised to a convincing six-shot victory at the Wyndham Championship. This marked his first Tour win after seven second-place finishes and four top-10 performances this season. The win also secured him a prize of $1.48 million, from a total purse of $8.2 million.

Young is now the 1,000th distinct victor in PGA Tour history.

Young began the final round with a five-shot lead, a result of his bogey-free 5-under 65 on Saturday. He extended his lead to eight shots at one point after carding four consecutive birdies on his front nine.

Though he started with a bogey on Sunday after his approach on the first landed just short of the green, Young quickly compensated. He made five straight birdies and easily regained his eight-shot lead. Young completed the front nine at 4-under for the day, saving his par at the ninth with an excellent approach from the thick rough beside the cart path.

Despite a slight stumble towards the end — he bogeyed the par-3 16th after missing a par save, and then bogeyed the 17th — it was inconsequential. He recorded a final round of 68 and secured the win.

Mac Meissner finished second alone at 16-under, while Mark Hubbard and Alex Noren tied for third at 15-under for the week. Matti Schmid finished T31 with his 1-over final round, which elevated him to No. 70 in the FedExCup standings. He’s the last player to qualify for the Tour’s postseason and will compete in next week’s FedEx St. Jude Championship in Memphis as a result.

Davis Thompson, however, is the first player to miss out. He shot 2-under on Sunday, even sinking a 47-foot birdie putt late in the day to move inside the top 70.

Thompson, though, eventually fell back to No. 71.

Young entered the week at No. 44 in the Official World Golf Rankings and was already set for the FedExCup Playoffs. But his victory on Sunday will boost him to No. 16 in the FedExCup standings, enough to qualify him for the season-ending Tour Championship, and to No. 21 in the OWGR.

It’s also poised to move him to No. 15 in the Ryder Cup standings. He began the week at No. 19 without a clear path to automatically qualify — only the top six secure a spot on the U.S. team this way — but Young is now likely to be considered for a captain’s pick, especially if he maintains this momentum through the first two playoff rounds.

Regardless of whether he represents the Americans next month, Young finally has a Tour victory to his name.
