Following a probe into accusations that surfaced while Mitch Love was pursuing various head-coaching opportunities throughout the NHL, the league has determined that he will be suspended for the rest of the current campaign.
Simultaneously, the Washington Capitals terminated Love’s employment. Love had been an assistant coach under Spencer Carbery for the previous two seasons. He was placed on leave last month pending the inquiry. Details regarding the nature of the investigation have not been disclosed.
“The organization is dedicated to upholding the strictest levels of behavior and responsibility,” the Capitals stated when declaring that Love had been relieved of his responsibilities, effective immediately. He had not been involved with the team since development camp in July.
The NHL stated that Love’s suspension was for behavior detrimental to the league, pending a comprehensive investigation. Love may seek reinstatement for the 2026-27 season, subject to specific requirements.
Love, who recently celebrated his 41st birthday in June, was considered to be a strong contender for at least the open positions in Pittsburgh and Seattle, and possibly others. Before joining Washington, he served as the head coach of the Calgary Flames’ American Hockey League affiliate from 2021 to 2023.
