Cash & Glasspool edge Norway despite scare.

Julian Cash and Lloyd Glasspool narrowly escaped a significant challenge before securing victory in the doubles event, advancing Great Britain to the ultimate stage of Davis Cup qualification following a 4-0 sweep against Norway.

The duo of Cash and Glasspool, having previously won Wimbledon, were widely expected to win when facing the less experienced pair of Viktor Durasovic and Nicolai Budkov Kjaer, who held doubles rankings of 491st and 1,187th.

Despite swiftly dominating the initial set, the team faltered entirely in the subsequent one during their captivating match held in Oslo.

Cash and Glasspool subsequently maintained their composure, ultimately prevailing with scores of 6-2, 2-6, 7-6 (7-5).

Following Cash’s decisive service ace that clinched the win, he began moving towards the baseline, as all competitors believed the match was heading for a 10-point tie-break.

Nevertheless, the official stepped in to declare that Great Britain had concluded the best-of-five contest as quickly as possible.

“This means everything,” Glasspool remarked about achieving his initial Davis Cup match victory.

“That had been a minor burden on us, and now we both feel somewhat liberated, anticipating many more successes.”

Jacob Fearnley subsequently defeated Budkov Kjaer with scores of 3-6, 6-4, 10-7, completing a comprehensive victory for Great Britain.

On Thursday, Jack Draper, returning to action, and Cameron Norrie each overcame Durasovic and Budkov Kjaer in their respective singles matches, establishing a commanding lead for Leon Smith’s squad.

Draper was absent from play on Friday and subsequently pulled out of the upcoming ATP tournament in Rotterdam, stating: “Even though I’m optimistic about my recuperation, I’ve been advised against immediately resuming play and potentially participating in consecutive matches.

“While it’s disappointing not to be competing again, my progress is generally moving favorably.”

Later this year, Great Britain will compete against either Ecuador or Australia for a spot in the Finals, which will feature eight teams in November.
