The Dallas Cowboys encountered an early setback during their lopsided 31-14 defeat against the Chicago Bears on Sunday afternoon, as star wide receiver CeeDee Lamb was sidelined early in the first quarter.
During the game at Soldier Field, Lamb took possession of the ball on a handoff from the backfield. While heading towards the right sideline, his left ankle suffered a twist due to contact with Noah Sewell during the tackle. Lamb struggled to get back on his feet and proceeded to limp off the field towards the bench.
The play, however, was nullified due to offsetting holding penalties. Lamb remained off the field. A few plays afterward, he limped without a cleat into the blue medical tent.
The Cowboys managed to salvage the drive with a 53-yard field goal from Brandon Aubrey, narrowing the Bears’ lead to four points.
Initially, the Cowboys reported that his return was uncertain due to an ankle injury. He did return at the beginning of the second quarter but seemed to aggravate his ankle while attempting a route. He started limping and signaled for assistance from the team’s athletic training staff as he slowly left the field.
Lamb was officially ruled out of the game at the commencement of the second half. Reports on Monday indicated that Lamb suffered what appeared to be a high-ankle sprain. Further evaluation was scheduled for Monday. Following the game, team owner Jerry Jones suggested that the injury wasn’t as severe as initially feared.
“We’re hoping for the best,” he commented, via The Athletic’s Jon Machota.
Before Sunday’s game, he had accumulated 222 receiving yards on 16 receptions this season, although he hadn’t yet reached the end zone.
Despite the Cowboys scoring 11 points in the second quarter to recover from a sluggish start, the Bears maintained a 24-14 lead at halftime. Caleb Williams’ late 10-yard touchdown pass to Cole Kmet contributed to this. Williams completed 239 passing yards and three touchdowns in the first half. The Bears then successfully kept Dallas from scoring for much of the second half, ensuring a decisive victory. This marked their first win of the season.
