Chad Anheliger Eyes Redemption vs. Steven Koslow at UFC Edmonton

The upcoming UFC Edmonton event presents a compelling chapter in Chad Anheliger’s journey, offering him a chance to transform past frustration into supreme triumph this coming weekend. Scheduled for October 17th, UFC Fight Night Edmonton features Anheliger going toe-to-toe with Steven Koslow in a bantamweight clash. Having recently welcomed a newborn baby just a few weeks back, Anheliger enters the Octagon with the added drive of fatherhood, alongside a refreshed mental focus gained during his spell away from competition. Speaking to MMA Canada, Anheliger shared:

“I’ve been competing professionally for a very long time, through countless fight camps and bouts. In the past, my mentality was completely consumed by achieving success in every session and fight. This upcoming bout offers me a fantastic chance to remind myself that the skills are already there without needing to overthink everything. Combat sports are wonderful, and I plan to enter the cage with a sense of freedom. I won’t be burnt out from overtraining like I usually am, which is a common hurdle for many elite athletes.”

“In a way, this scenario provided the ideal setup for me to perform at my absolute peak. I feel like I’m in a great space mentally. Because I was expecting the baby, I pushed my preparation forward and built my conditioning ahead of schedule. It was a unique training camp and peak timeline for me, but I believe it will work entirely to my advantage.”

“At this stage of my career, I can’t push my body in the same manner I used to. Besides, my former approach wasn’t really the smartest anyway. I used to just grind relentlessly, which led to repeated injuries. These days, I feel healthier and stronger than ever.”

Given that Koslow is likewise stepping back into competition following an extended absence—which adds a layer of uncertainty regarding his current skill set and tactical game plan—Anheliger explained to MMA Canada:

“That is really where the UFC excels—crafting intriguing matchups with unique storylines. I haven’t checked the stats, but considering I’ve been away for two years and he’s been out for four, this must be one of the longest combined hiatuses for an opponent pairing in recent history, if not ever. It’s fascinating. Four years is a substantial period, especially for a younger fighter, so he could have evolved in numerous ways.”

“My own two-year hiatus brought about significant personal growth as well. It’s thrilling because it removes the pressure and allows you to simply hone your skills, show up, and compete. I can’t linger on his past fights or guess what moves he might make, and he likely feels the same way about me.”

“It creates a dynamic where we just enter the cage and let things unfold. Everyone—the spectators, the fighters, the whole audience—will witness how the action develops live as it happens.”

The upcoming UFC Edmonton event carries extra significance for Chad Anheliger

Reflecting on the fact that his previous UFC appearance was also held in Edmonton, stepping back onto the canvas in Alberta holds profound personal meaning for him. Anheliger noted to MMA Canada:

“It’s incredibly thrilling. To me, this feels like an ideal story of redemption. My last outing in Edmonton went terribly and resulted in a severe injury, which left me deeply disappointed with how things turned out. Following that, I had an extended period to recover, resume training, and refine my abilities.”

“Now, seeing everything come full circle, I have the opportunity to return to Edmonton and wipe the slate clean. I can deliver a triumphant comeback for both myself and my supporters. Honestly, I couldn’t be more thrilled with how this was arranged.”

When breaking down the technical elements of the bout and assessing Koslow’s primary strengths shown in past fights, Anheliger remarked to MMA Canada:

“Without a doubt, his grappling and jiu-jitsu remain his core strengths, and I recognize how formidable he is on the mat. I assume he’s spent his time off broadening his overall game, as his skill set wasn’t as well-rounded previously.”

“Nevertheless, his submission threat is real, so I’ll be fully ready for it. Overall, I’m anticipating an upgraded opponent in every aspect. My goal is to test him across all disciplines, assess the situation in real time, and locate my route to victory.”
