The Kansas City Chiefs, led by their coach Andy Reid, find themselves in a situation unfamiliar during his leadership. As December begins, the Chiefs are currently not in a playoff spot in the AFC. Reid addressed the media on Monday, discussing the obstacles of a season and those his team is encountering as they approach the final five games.
“Each year presents its own unique circumstances,” Reid conveyed to reporters. “This sport is characterized by challenges. That’s the essence of it. It mirrors life in many ways. There are always difficulties. … The line between victory and defeat is so narrow that each week presents a challenge, a significant challenge. That’s the mindset you must adopt, and you must be prepared for it.”
Kansas City holds a 6-6 record, placing them 10th in the AFC standings and third in the AFC West. Any aspirations of securing a 10th consecutive AFC West title are nearly extinguished, as the Denver Broncos improved to 10-2 on Sunday night. The Chiefs trail by four games in the division race and are two games behind the second-place Los Angeles Chargers, who advanced to 8-4 in Week 13.

The Chiefs are at risk of missing the playoffs for only the second instance since Reid assumed the head coaching role in KC in 2013; the other occurrence was in his second season (2014) when the team concluded with a 9-7 record. This was prior to Patrick Mahomes being drafted. Since Reid’s arrival from Philadelphia in 2013, the Chiefs have consistently maintained a record above .500.
Following a loss to Dallas on Thanksgiving, the Chiefs may need to win all of their remaining five games and rely on favorable outcomes from other teams to secure a wild-card berth in the AFC. Their upcoming schedule includes games against Houston, L.A. Chargers, Tennessee, Denver, and Las Vegas.
“You’re separated by a play or two, and that’s the nature of this game,” Reid stated. ”Looking at our season, we’re close, separated by a play or two. If we address that—whether it’s a penalty at a critical moment, a potential turnover, or capitalizing on a turnover opportunity—we are positioned to turn things around by resolving those few plays.”
Penalties have emerged as a concern for a team typically known for its discipline. The Chiefs have accumulated the fifth-most penalty yardage in the league this season. Defensively, their pass rush has been lacking, managing only 22 sacks in 12 games, ranking as the fifth worst in the NFL. They’ve only forced 11 turnovers this season, placing them third worst in the league.
KC is experiencing a sense of urgency for the first time in a while. Ten teams in the AFC still have a viable chance of reaching the postseason, and the Chiefs cannot afford further setbacks as they continue to compete for a playoff spot.
In Week 14, the Chiefs will participate in Sunday Night Football in a crucial AFC matchup against the Houston Texans at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium.
