Cilic Defeats Draper in Wimbledon 2025 Second Round

Jack Draper’s ambition to secure his initial Wimbledon championship on familiar territory met an unexpected conclusion prematurely. Draper, seeded fourth in the competition, faced elimination at the hands of Marin Cilic during their second-round match on Thursday.

Cilic triumphed over Draper in a four-set encounter (6-4, 6-3, 1-6, 6-4) to secure the victory.

Draper suffered defeat despite committing fewer unforced errors in comparison to Cilic. Draper also recorded zero double faults compared to Cilic’s six, yet still conceded the match.

Cilic secured his victory through precise shot execution, accumulating 53 winning shots against Draper’s 29.

The win allows Cilic, who entered Wimbledon ranked 83rd by the ATP, to progress to the third round of the tournament for the ninth instance in his career. He previously reached the final in 2017, where he was defeated by Roger Federer. While Cilic has not yet secured a Wimbledon title, he has demonstrated a strong track record there, maintaining a 69% winning percentage leading up to Thursday’s match.

Although Cilic has encountered challenges in recent seasons, the 36-year-old possesses a history of achievement in the sport. He clinched the 2014 U.S. Open and attained a world ranking as high as No. 3 in 2018. Cilic consistently performed well at Grand Slam events until 2023, when a knee injury compelled him to take an extended break from major tournaments. He made his return to competition for the 2024 Australian Open, but withdrew from the 2024 French Open and did not participate in subsequent Grand Slams following knee surgery. Cilic also remained absent from the 2025 Australian Open due to his recuperation from the surgical procedure.

Draper’s unexpected defeat aligns with a tournament characterized by several upsets. Wimbledon has witnessed the early exits of prominent players in 2025, including No. 2 Coco Gauff, No. 3 Jessica Pegula, and No. 3 Alexander Zverev. Draper emerges as the most recent high-profile player to be eliminated from the competition sooner than anticipated.

Notwithstanding his ranking, Draper, aged 23, has experienced difficulty at Wimbledon. Entering Thursday’s match, Draper held a 43% winning percentage throughout the tournament and had never advanced beyond the second round.

That trend persisted following his premature departure against Cilic on Thursday.
