Sonay Kartal, representing Great Britain, experienced an initial round elimination against Caroline Garcia at the Cincinnati Open.
The tennis player, aged 23, was overcome with scores of 7-5, 4-6, 3-6 by her competitor from France, the prior champion of the 2022 competition.
Garcia, previously ranked fourth globally, is scheduled to compete against Karolina Muchova, following the 31-year-old’s initial triumph since March 19, after her declaration in May, external that she intended to conclude her career later in the current year.
Kartal’s defeat accompanied earlier first-round dismissals for British counterparts Katie Boulter and Jacob Fearnley.
Boulter, aged 29, was bested 6-0, 7-5 by Serbia’s Olga Danilovic, who is now set to encounter Emma Raducanu – who recently supplanted Boulter as the leading British female player – in the subsequent round.
