The mayor of Cluj-Napoca, Emil Boc, has confirmed that the Romanian municipality will be the venue for PGL esports competitions over the upcoming three-year period.

This alliance with the esports event organizer prolongs the initial agreement established between the entities, originally formed in 2025.

Via an Instagram update shared on February 22nd, the Mayor disclosed that Cluj-Napoca is slated to stage an annual Counter-Strike championship within the city for the years 2027, 2028, and 2029, thereby solidifying its position within the top-tier tournament schedule.

“This is excellent news for esports enthusiasts both in Cluj-Napoca and globally,” remarked the Mayor. “Our collaboration with PGL has been prolonged through 2027, 2028, and 2029, ensuring we can persistently arrange premier esports events at the BT Arena in the forthcoming period.”

For February 2027 and 2028, PGL has already secured dates, with the competition expected to retain its traditional mid-February placement on the Tier 1 schedule. Consequently, the upcoming year’s championship is planned for February 11th through 22nd, and the 2028 edition will run from February 9th to 21st.

During the Cluj-Napoca 2026 Grand Final on February 22nd, Team Vitality decisively defeated Parivision, solidifying their standing as the top team globally. The city previously hosted a Major event in 2015, where Envy claimed victory.

The Ongoing Expansion of PGL

Over the past few years, PGL has firmly established itself as one of the foremost esports tournament organizers globally, drawing in numerous prominent competitors to its events. Furthermore, it has forged various collaborations to bolster its competitions held worldwide.

In December 2025, PGL entered into an alliance with gaming furniture producer Secretlab, aiming to furnish participants with uniform practice and performance settings throughout all PGL-managed tournaments scheduled for the subsequent year.

Romania maintains its crucial role in PGL’s Counter-Strike activities. Bucharest is scheduled to host top-tier tournaments in April and September at the organizer’s specialized studio.
