Collazo Retains Title After Vayson’s Corner Stoppage

Oscar Collazo (13-0, 10 KOs) preserved his WBO minimumweight title through a peculiar seventh-round technical knockout against Jayson Vayson (14-2-1, 8 KOs) during a Saturday night fight at the Fantasy Springs Casino in Indio, California. The fight, up until its conclusion, showcased a high level of competition. The official stoppage time was recorded at 1:41.

During the seventh round, Vayson’s corner made the request to cease the fight. Despite appearing somewhat weary from the fight’s intensity, Vayson seemed to be in acceptable condition. He wasn’t absorbing excessive punishment from Collazo, and no apparent reason existed to justify ending the fight. Vayson had been delivering the more forceful punches throughout the match, and at the time of the stoppage, the competition seemed nearly balanced.

During the initial round, Collazo was credited with a knockdown after striking Vayson with a glancing blow. Replays indicated that the strike wasn’t entirely clean, yet referee Thomas Taylor validated it. Fortunately, this judgment, which several boxing enthusiasts on social media deemed erroneous, didn’t influence the ultimate result.

Vayson, possessing natural strength, displayed skillful fighting in rounds four and five, landing substantial blows to Collazo’s head and body throughout. Collazo retaliated strongly in the sixth, pushing a visibly fatigued Vayson against the ropes and launching numerous powerful punches towards his head.

Vayson continued to exhibit signs of weariness in the seventh round, absorbing both body and head shots from Collazo. Jayson appeared to have depleted his energy reserves, as his punches lacked their earlier impact, and he seemed completely drained.

“I desired to continue fighting, yet I respect my corner’s choice. I feel the impact of the blows on my body, but I’m disappointed by the premature stoppage,” Jayson Vayson stated post-fight, referencing his technical knockout loss to Oscar Collazo.

“I intend to become the next undisputed champion of Puerto Rico. By 2026, you will witness the next undisputed champion representing Puerto Rico. I would gladly contend with Sandoval. Puerto Rico versus Mexico presents an engaging matchup.”

In the evening’s co-feature, Gabriela Fundora (17-0, 9 KOs), the undisputed flyweight champion, achieved a seventh-round TKO victory over her challenger, Alexas Kubicki (13-2, 2 KOs). In the seventh round, Fundora cornered Kubicki against the ropes and unleashed a flurry of strikes, compelling the referee to intervene and stop the fight at 0:43 of the round.
