Anthony Richardson remained at a medical facility throughout the Indianapolis Colts’ 31-27 triumph over the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday. The reason was a fractured orbital bone he sustained during the Lucas Oil Stadium pregame routines.
On Monday, team management announced Richardson’s placement on the injured reserve list. This action mandates his absence for a minimum of four contests. As per official sources, a specific return date is currently unavailable. Team strategists are actively seeking an additional quarterback to support both the primary player, Daniel Jones, and the emerging rookie, Riley Leonard.
Richardson, who was initially slated for the backup quarterback role, received his exclusion notice shortly before the game’s commencement. Head Coach Shane Steichen reported the “unusual incident” occurred while Richardson was using a resistance band for stretching exercises in the locker room.

Post-game, Coach Steichen verified the orbital bone fracture. Consequently, Richardson was transported to a nearby medical center, where he stayed for the game’s duration. According to James Boyd from The Athletic, his recovery is progressing, and he was discharged on Sunday evening.
Richardson’s tenure has been characterized by various physical setbacks. Following his selection as the No. 4 overall pick in the 2023 draft, he was sidelined for 17 games. Over his initial two seasons, injuries prevented him from participating in more than four consecutive games. A dislocated finger during the preseason preceded his loss of the starting position to Daniel Jones. Since then, Jones has guided the team to a 5-1 record.
Richardson’s career statistics include an 8-7 record as a starter, with 13 interceptions versus 11 touchdowns. His previous season’s pass completion rate was under 48%, marking the lowest in the league.
In addition to Richardson, cornerback Charvarius Ward also experienced a pregame mishap on Sunday. He collided with tight end Drew Ogletree, resulting in a concussion and his subsequent unavailability.
Despite the absence of both Richardson and Ward, the Colts managed to secure a victory against the Cardinals, largely due to a late-game touchdown rush by Jonathan Taylor. Jones completed 22 out of 30 passes for 212 yards, resulting in two touchdowns and one interception. Taylor’s performance included 123 rushing yards and one touchdown over 21 carries.
Looking ahead, the Colts are scheduled to compete against the Los Angeles Chargers in the upcoming week. With Richardson unavailable, Leonard will continue in his role as Jones’ backup.
