The Washington Commanders experienced a challenging commencement against the Green Bay Packers, which intensified during the second quarter when Deatrich Wise Jr. needed assistance to exit the playing area. The seasoned defensive player seemingly sustained an injury to his lower limb while attempting to impede a Brandon McManus extra point endeavor.

Prior to the game, Wise’s participation was uncertain due to a knee concern. He was formally declared unable to continue due to a quad injury at the game’s midpoint.

Washington was already trailing by a score of 13-0 when the misfortune occurred, having previously yielded a first-quarter 5-yard scoring reception from Jordan Love to Romeo Doubs, in addition to a 2-yard rushing score by Josh Jacobs.

Wise, aged 31, joined Washington during the recent offseason, agreeing to a one-year contract valued at $5 million, following an eight-year tenure with the New England Patriots. He was anticipated to play a pivotal role within a revamped defensive unit, intended to enhance their resistance against ground attacks, an area where Washington struggled, allowing an average of 4.8 yards per attempt the preceding season, ranking 28th in the NFL. In Washington’s initial contest, a 21-6 triumph over the Giants, Wise contributed three tackles, one resulting in a loss, and a quarterback hit, aiding in restricting New York to only 74 rushing yards.

Although the Commanders may not possess a singularly dominant pass-rushing presence, there’s a sense of confidence regarding the overall robustness of their defensive line. A significant injury to Wise, however, would represent a considerable setback. Javontae Jean-Baptiste, Jacob Martin, and potentially Von Miller could anticipate increased playing opportunities in Wise’s absence.
