Connor Shaw, a former signal-caller for the University of South Carolina, was admitted to a medical facility Wednesday evening following a collapse during his son’s football practice.
According to an official statement from Simpsonville, South Carolina, released to WYFF in Greenville, South Carolina, Shaw experienced a sudden health event shortly after the commencement of the game and is currently receiving treatment while in a stable state.
“While serving as a coach for his son’s 8-and-under football team at Gracely Park on Wednesday evening, Connor Shaw unexpectedly collapsed approximately 15 minutes into the game,” the city’s statement detailed. “Emergency Medical Services promptly arrived at the location and transported Mr. Shaw to Greenville Memorial. The Simpsonville Parks Department has been informed that Mr. Shaw’s condition is stable. The employees of Parks and Recreation and the City of Simpsonville extend their thoughts and prayers to Mr. Shaw and his family, wishing him a swift and complete recovery.”
The State newspaper reported that Shaw is under care in the medical intensive care unit.
Shaw, age 33, stands as one of the most accomplished quarterbacks in the history of South Carolina football. He competed for the Gamecocks from 2010 to 2013, participating in a total of 43 games throughout his collegiate career. He successfully completed 65% of his pass attempts, amassing 6,074 yards and 56 touchdowns while throwing 15 interceptions.
During his senior year in 2013, Shaw delivered 24 touchdown passes and threw only a single interception out of 284 attempts. He currently holds the second position in career touchdown passes at USC, trailing only Steve Taneyhill, and only three Gamecocks players have surpassed Shaw’s single-season touchdown record from 2013.
Shaw entered the professional arena by signing with the Cleveland Browns as an undrafted free agent in 2014, making one appearance for the team. He commenced the team’s game against the Baltimore Ravens on December 28, 2014, which resulted in a 20-10 loss, completing 14 of 28 passes for 177 yards and one interception.
After spending the 2015 season on the sidelines due to a thumb injury, Shaw was acquired by the Chicago Bears off waivers in the summer of 2016. However, he never participated in a regular-season game for the team, facing a broken leg during that preseason and a hamstring injury during the 2017 preseason.
