No National Basketball Association competitor younger than Cooper Flagg has accumulated more points than Flagg did on Thursday.
Competing against the Charlotte Hornets and his former collegiate housemate, Kon Knueppel, Flagg registered a personal best of 49 points during a 123-121 defeat for the Dallas Mavericks. No player still in their teenage years has ever amassed that many points throughout NBA history, and it also establishes a new rookie benchmark for the Mavericks.
This particular achievement was previously shared by Flagg and Mark Aguirre. By a remarkable turn of events, the Mavericks were honoring Aguirre by retiring his No. 24 jersey on that very Thursday evening.
Knueppel also attained a personal scoring peak with 34 points on 10-of-16 shooting, including a franchise-leading eight successful 3-pointers, plus 4 boards and 3 assists. In addition to being just one point shy of 50, Flagg gathered 10 rebounds and 3 assists while making 20 of his 29 field goal attempts.
The match’s conclusion ultimately rested on both players. Flagg leveled the score at 121 with a 3-point shot with 34 seconds remaining, but Knueppel executed a steal at his rival’s expense on the subsequent Dallas possession and proceeded to make a pair of free throws to take the advantage.
Flagg had an opportunity to equalize the score and reach the fifty-point milestone, but his attempt at the buzzer, launched while navigating a double team, went long.
Regardless of the final outcome, Flagg continued to join an elite group at just 19 years of age. Apart from having the most points by a player under twenty, he is now one of three athletes to register multiple 40-point contests at 19 or younger, placing him alongside LeBron James and Anthony Edwards.
The triumph was a welcome boost for the 21-28 Hornets, who are now 2.5 games behind the Chicago Bulls for the final play-in tournament position in the Eastern Conference. Knueppel’s standout display further solidified a strong inaugural year for the fourth overall draft selection, who ranks second among NBA rookies in average points per game with 18.9, trailing only Flagg.
