Cooper Flagg achieved an unprecedented feat in NBA history following Friday’s game.
The newcomer for the Dallas Mavericks, at 19 years and 103 days old, established himself as the youngest athlete ever in the NBA to reach the 50-point milestone. His performance included 51 points, 6 boards, 3 dimes, and 3 takeaways, despite a 138-127 defeat against the Orlando Magic.
He tallied several of those points with remarkable flair.
Furthermore, Flagg is just the ninth first-year player in NBA annals to achieve a 50-point outing, joining an exclusive group that includes Wilt Chamberlain, Rick Barry, Earl Monroe, Brandon Jennings, Elgin Baylor, Elvin Hayes, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and Allen Iverson. Notably, none of these preceding players were still in their teenage years when they achieved this scoring benchmark.
Flagg had previously set his personal best at 49 points, which likewise stood as the highest score ever recorded by a teenager in the NBA. He retains the opportunity to surpass this achievement once more, given that his 20th birthday is not until December 21st.
The Mavericks were clearly keen for him to reach this benchmark. After head coach Jason Kidd was ejected for disputing a missed foul call concerning Flagg, assistant coach Frank Vogel assumed control and substituted Flagg out with 3 minutes and 35 seconds remaining in the match.
By that moment, Flagg had accumulated 45 points, yet Dallas trailed by 17 points. The outcome of the game was already decided, but Vogel chose to reintroduce Flagg into the contest 22 seconds afterward, allowing him to pursue a historical accomplishment. He has contended with ailments and participated in 11 fewer matches, but he has also delivered breakout performances that Knueppel has not. Furthermore, only a handful of individuals would currently choose Knueppel over Flagg for their long-term prospects, regardless of their inaugural professional seasons’ outcomes.
This discourse may not be as settled as some presume. And a performance scoring 50 points provides a remarkable catalyst to reignite the debate.
