According to a statement released on Tuesday morning by Real Madrid, their goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois will not participate in Wednesday’s UEFA Champions League game against Olympiakos due to gastroenteritis.
The official statement from Real Madrid stated the following: “Following tests carried out today on Thibaut Courtois by the Real Madrid Medical Services, he has been diagnosed with a viral gastrointestinal issue. He will not be available for the journey to Athens. Further assessments are pending.”

In Courtois’ absence, Andriy Lunin, the backup goalkeeper, will take his place in the starting eleven. This will mark the Ukrainian player’s first appearance of the season. Although Lunin is a dependable player, starting his season in a challenging environment like Olympiakos’ stadium is not the best scenario for Real Madrid, especially as they are trying to recover from recent setbacks against Liverpool, Rayo Vallecano, and Elche.
