A member of the Dallas Cowboys defensive line, Marshawn Kneeland, age 24, passed away on Thursday morning. Information indicates that Kneeland’s passing was due to a self-inflicted gunshot wound after a police chase stemming from a traffic infraction, as reported by the Frisco Police Department and the Texas Department of Public Safety.
During the pursuit of Kneeland after he did not stop for a traffic violation, DPS officers lost sight of the vehicle he was operating. When Kneeland’s car was eventually discovered, it had apparently been involved in a collision. Law enforcement discovered Kneeland, who was deceased, during a search of the surrounding area.
“Preliminary information suggests that a male individual, later identified as Marshawn Kneeland, age 24, from Plano, TX, left the location on foot. Officers established a perimeter and began a search of the area, utilizing the resources of the FPD K-9 and Drone units. As the search progressed, officers obtained details indicating that Kneeland had expressed thoughts of ending his life. Kneeland was subsequently located at 1:31 a.m., deceased, with what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound,” the Frisco Police stated.
A representative from the Plano Police Department communicated that officers had previously responded to a “concern for welfare” at Kneeland’s home at 11:40 p.m. on Wednesday; however, they were unable to make contact with anyone at that time.
According to dispatch recordings obtained by TMZ, law enforcement received communications from Kneeland’s girlfriend and the NFL. Kneeland’s girlfriend reported receiving an unsettling communication from Kneeland, who reportedly had a history of mental health challenges, suggesting he intended to “end it all.” The NFL relayed that they had been contacted by family members, who indicated Kneeland was sending them “goodbye” messages.
Kneeland’s family issued the following statement to the media expressing their sorrow:
“We are heartbroken by this immense loss and are still grappling with the depth of our sorrow. While Marshawn was starting to make an impact on the football field with the Dallas Cowboys, he occupied an even more significant role off the field — as a caring son, brother, uncle, cousin, nephew, grandson, and friend. He possessed kindness, determination, humility, and an abundance of love. His presence illuminated the lives of many, and his spirit will endure through the countless individuals he inspired.
“We are extremely thankful for the outpouring of affection and support received from friends, fans, and the community. During this challenging period, we kindly request privacy as our family comes together to celebrate and remember Marshawn’s life and legacy.”
The Cowboys expressed their sentiments in a team statement: “It is with profound sadness that the Dallas Cowboys announce the tragic passing of Marshawn Kneeland this morning. Marshawn was a valued member of our team and organization. Our thoughts and prayers are extended to his girlfriend Catalina and his family.”
Before the Week 10 game between the Las Vegas Raiders and the Denver Broncos on Thursday night, the NFL observed a moment of silence in remembrance of Kneeland:
Kneeland, a second-round selection in the 2024 NFL Draft, was in the midst of his second season with Dallas. In Week 1 against Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts, he achieved his first professional sack.
During Kneeland’s most recent game against the Arizona Cardinals — which was broadcast during prime time on “Monday Night Football” — he recovered a blocked punt within the end zone, marking his first professional touchdown. The Cowboys were defeated, 27-17.
Kneeland had a successful career in high school and college, standing out as a linebacker/tight end at Godwin Heights High School in Michigan. During his final season at Western Michigan, he was named to the All-Mid-American Conference second team after recording 57 tackles (7.5 for loss), 4.5 sacks, and forcing two fumbles.
“He was a remarkable individual, dedicated to learning … and driven to excel,” one of Kneeland’s previous coaches, Mike Zimmer, shared with NFL Media. “He wasn’t afraid to stand up to anyone on the field. He was diligent in his studies — and loved the game. My final words to him were, ‘Stay true to yourself. You are destined for a successful career.'”
