The Dallas Cowboys might have altered their stance on their premier defensive player, Micah Parsons. Shortly after franchise head Jerry Jones communicated his reluctance to trade Parsons, it appears the team is now open to considering offers for the decorated player, according to reports from ESPN.
Parsons, currently 26 years old, is reportedly engaged in disagreements with the organization concerning his contractual terms. As he approaches the final year of his initial rookie contract, Parsons is purportedly seeking a long-term commitment from the Cowboys. Although Parsons and Jones engaged in preliminary discussions regarding a contract during early March, the dialogue purportedly stalled when Parsons directed Jones to communicate with his representative.
Reportedly, Jones and Parsons explored the possibility of a five-year contract extension that would provide Parsons with an average yearly compensation of $40.5 million, as indicated by ESPN. However, Parsons’ agent was not present during that particular meeting, and Parsons later conveyed that he did not regard the conversation with Jones as a formal negotiation. Since that time, the Cowboys have not presented any new contract proposals to Parsons.
The situation allegedly escalated as the offseason progressed, ultimately culminating in Parsons requesting a trade from the Cowboys in early August. Later in the same month, Jones embarked on a media promotional tour, reportedly criticizing Parsons’ agent during numerous appearances.

Parsons did attend the team’s training camp during the summer months, but reportedly has not participated in any preseason games or practice sessions as he anticipates a revised agreement.
While an immediate trade is not anticipated, as noted by ESPN, the Cowboys are said to desire a resolution to Parsons’ situation before the team’s initial game against the Philadelphia Eagles during Week 1. These two rivals in the NFC East division are slated to commence the 2025 NFL season on Thursday, September 4th. Dallas is scheduled to hold its first complete practice session in preparation for the Eagles on Friday.
Reports suggest multiple teams have expressed their interest, and a potential agreement could materialize rapidly should one of these teams present a compelling offer for Parsons, according to ESPN. It is assumed that any team acquiring Parsons would be required to secure him with a long-term extension. It remains unclear whether Parsons’ representative, David Mulugheta, has the authority to negotiate an extension with interested teams.
If Parsons remains with his current team without being traded, his options are potentially limited. He could conclude his hold-in and complete the final year of his current contract, recommence contract discussions and secure a long-term commitment with the Cowboys, or prolong his absence due to a back ailment.
Each of these potential choices offers both benefits and drawbacks. Should Parsons play out his existing contract, he may not attain free agency at the end of the season. Jones has seemingly suggested the possibility of applying the franchise tag to Parsons on two separate occasions, which would put Parsons in nearly the same situation during the subsequent offseason.
If Parsons resolves to re-engage in contract talks, the issue of Mulugheta’s involvement might continue to cause difficulties for Jones.
In a situation where Parsons persists in sitting out due to an injury, he could face disciplinary measures or fines from the team. The Cowboys reportedly ordered an MRI examination of Parsons’ back on the previous Friday and determined the All-Pro was medically cleared to resume practice. Parsons is said to be pursuing a second medical assessment of the injury.
