Crawford Can’t Copy GGG’s Canelo Strategy, Says Sanchez

Boxing figure Abel Sanchez believes Terence Crawford will face difficulties replicating Gennadiy Golovkin’s approach of confronting Canelo Alvarez directly, using power to control the distance.

Impact of Canelo’s Strikes

Sanchez points out that Crawford (41-0, 31 KOs) lacks GGG’s striking force, is not naturally suited for the 160 or 168-pound divisions, and has not had sufficient time to adapt his physique.

“He has a lot of pride. He’s a fighter who aims for victory, but he’ll need to pause at times. During those pauses, like in the Madrimov fight, Canelo will find openings, time his strikes, and land punches. And if those punches connect, they’ll wear him down,” Abel Sanchez mentioned to Secondsout, while commenting on the upcoming Canelo Alvarez versus Terence Crawford match scheduled for September 13th.

Crawford is undoubtedly aware that Turki Alalshikh is seeking an engaging contest, not a lackluster performance. He desires an event that captivates millions of Netflix viewers and the audience at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas. Consequently, Terence will engage, offering Canelo opportunities to connect with powerful shots.

Comparison: Crawford vs. GGG’s Power

“Crawford simply cannot replicate what Golovkin did. Golovkin is an exceptional fighter,” Sanchez stated. “He was a robust 160-pounder, highly effective, and a significant puncher, attributes Crawford lacks. Crawford possesses excellent technique, but he doesn’t have the necessary punch to deter Canelo. Golovkin had the punch and strength to keep Canelo at bay and prevent him from dictating the fight. I don’t believe Crawford has that capability, regardless of whether he’s at 160 or 168 pounds.”

Crawford’s power does not compare to Golovkin’s. Gennadiy was a unique fighter in terms of power. Arguably, GGG’s jab was more potent than Crawford’s hardest hit. He can’t emulate Gennadiy’s strength, moving from 154 to 168 to challenge Canelo.

In Crawford’s recent bout at 154 against Israil Madrimov, nicknamed ‘Little GGG,’ it was evident that his power didn’t translate effectively at junior middleweight. His punches still carried welterweight power, leading him to rely on outworking Madrimov with increased volume in the later rounds to secure the win. Moving up two weight classes to 168 will likely exacerbate this issue for Crawford.

Crawford’s Accelerated Preparation

“He hasn’t had enough time to build the strength and overall physical power necessary to punch with the impact required to challenge someone as formidable as Canelo. You can’t equate Golovkin with this version of Crawford,” Sanchez remarked.

Crawford’s preparation for the Canelo fight seems rushed. Terence opted against taking preparatory fights to adjust to the 168-lb division. While he has gained weight, it remains to be seen if this will enable him to transform into a fighter with Golovkin’s power.
