We are currently experiencing the quieter, initial stages of the MLB offseason. While impactful free-agent acquisitions can occasionally happen early, such as Blake Snell’s move to the Dodgers the previous year, this period is generally characterized by teams establishing their strategies for the upcoming season.

The day’s developments and speculations will be compiled and presented here.

Cubs Secure Talented Relief Pitcher

According to reports from The Athletic, the Chicago Cubs have reached an agreement to sign Phil Maton, a right-handed relief pitcher, to a two-year contract.

Maton, who is 32 years old, posted a 2.79 ERA, a 1.06 WHIP, and recorded 81 strikeouts across 61 ⅓ innings pitched during the recent season. In contrast to numerous strikeout-oriented pitchers prevalent today, Maton’s fastball velocity remains below 90 miles per hour. He generates swings and misses through the utilization of his cutter, sinker, and curveball, while also demonstrating an aptitude for minimizing solid contact from opposing batters.

Despite the makeshift nature of their bullpen during the previous season, the Cubs successfully assembled a competent group of relief pitchers. However, several key members of their high-leverage bullpen unit have entered free agency, including Brad Keller, Caleb Thielbar, and Drew Pomeranz. Additionally, Andrew Kittredge was traded back to the Baltimore Orioles.

Presently, it is anticipated that Maton will team up with Daniel Palencia and Porter Hodge to handle the later innings for the Cubs.

Diamondbacks Resign Reserve Catcher

The Arizona Diamondbacks have announced the re-signing of catcher James McCann to a one-year deal. McCann was a free agent until March 21 of the previous season, initially signing with the Atlanta Braves. However, he was released on June 22 and subsequently joined the Diamondbacks the following day.

Over 42 games with the Diamondbacks, McCann achieved a batting line of .260/.324/.431 (107 OPS+), along with five home runs, 17 RBIs, and a 1.0 WAR. He continues to be a reliable defensive player and serves as a valuable backup to starting catcher Gabriel Moreno.
