Curry & Under Armour Donate Millions to Charlotte Rec Center

The festivities of the 2019 NBA All-Star Weekend have landed in Charlotte, North Carolina, and Golden State Warriors star player Stephen Curry is seizing the occasion to support his place of origin.

Curry is collaborating with Under Armour and Chase Bank to pledge a “seven-figure commitment” to Charlotte’s Carole Hoefener Center, as reported by ESPN’s Nick DePaula.

The Carole Hoefener Center, established in 1999, includes a versatile gymnasium. Planned improvements encompass “updated restrooms, changing areas, and a renewed meeting area, along with refreshed ceilings and flooring throughout.” Furthermore, a new Curry Kitchen, designed to encourage healthy dietary practices, a Curry Court, and the Chase Education Space are being added.

This endeavor has been in development since the celebrated two-time NBA MVP inked a lucrative five-year, $201 million maximum compensation agreement with the Warriors back in July of 2017.

According to DePaula, Curry expressed a wish for this significant weekend to prioritize the community, rather than his own recognition. This motivation led him to focus on the Carole Hoefener Center, where his own journey, along with that of his brother, Portland Trail Blazers player Seth Curry, began.

“This is the place where we acquired our fundamental basketball skills,” Stephen Curry shared, as stated by DePaula. “Charlotte will forever be regarded as home.”

The three-time NBA champion further stated: “We chose the Carole Hoefener Center for a distinct purpose. Their guiding principles align closely with those of our family, particularly in relation to providing equal opportunities in education, promoting awareness regarding nutrition and well-being, and offering a secure and inspiring environment for recreational activities.”

In addition to the Curry-Under Armor funding, DePaula highlights the National Basketball Players Association’s commitment to donate $150,000 over the subsequent three years.
