Harriet Dart and Jodie Burrage secured a straight-sets doubles triumph, propelling Great Britain into the Billie Jean King Cup finals scheduled for September after a remarkable win over Australia.
Making their debut as a pair, Dart and Burrage overcame Storm Hunter and Ellen Perez with scores of 6-3 and 6-4 on the hard courts in Melbourne on Saturday, thereby securing an insurmountable 3-0 advantage in the best-of-five qualifying contest.
On Friday, Great Britain had already claimed victory in both singles encounters; 17-year-old Mika Stojsavljevic remarkably defeated Talia Gibson – who held a ranking over 200 spots higher – in straight sets during her inaugural appearance, and subsequently, Dart rallied from losing the first set to defeat Kimberly Birrell.
Seventeen-year-old Australian Emerson Jones secured a 7-5 6-3 win against Katie Swan in a consolation singles match, which failed to diminish Britain’s jubilation, only narrowing their ultimate victory margin to 3-1 in the contest held at John Cain Arena, a prominent venue for the Australian Open.
The British team emerged as the second nation to secure a spot in the eight-team finals set for Shenzhen in September, alongside host nation China; later that Saturday, reigning champions Italy solidified their position by finalizing a 3-0 triumph against Japan. Australia, conversely, will participate in the November play-offs.
After reaching the semi-finals in the previous two tournaments and now achieving an unexpected victory over Australia, team captain Anne Keothavong expressed her belief that Great Britain possesses the capability to “accomplish something extraordinary” in pursuit of their first championship.
“Our excitement is immense,” Keothavong stated. “I must commend the athletes on my squad for stepping onto the court and demonstrating such precision in their execution, maintaining their composure, and delivering such a high level of performance.”
“Achieving the championship trophy remains our primary objective. I am aware that we have athletes, along with considerable talent and extensive resources across the UK, capable of achieving remarkable feats in this event.”
“Upon our arrival at the finals, irrespective of the specific individuals on my roster, we absolutely will not be present merely to participate.”
