Davis Camp Questions Gloves, Paul Switches to 10-oz.

During a press event held today in Miami, Florida, to promote their scheduled November 14 face-off on Netflix, Jake Paul consented to a request from Gervonta Davis and his trainer, Calvin Ford, to reduce his glove size from 12-oz to 10-oz.

An Odd Inquiry from a Trainer

During the promotional gathering, Tank’s trainer, Calvin Ford, questioned Jake Paul regarding his choice of 12-oz gloves, noting that Davis uses 8 oz. Paul clarified that a member of their team had initially requested the 12-oz gloves. He stated that the request didn’t originate from his camp, but he was amenable to using 10-oz gloves.

Eventually, an agreement was reached for Paul to use 10-oz gloves for their forthcoming exhibition bout. It’s somewhat perplexing that Ford would raise concerns about Jake using larger gloves, as those would seemingly benefit Davis. Why would they prefer that Tank Davis be hit by a cruiserweight wearing 10-oz gloves instead of 12-oz gloves? It seems counterintuitive. Among all potential points of contention, why focus on this particular aspect?

Trainer Calvin Ford: “I serve as Gervonta’s coach. Where did the specification for 12-oz gloves originate? Why couldn’t you opt for 10-oz while he uses eight? He’s already conceding four ounces in glove weight. I felt compelled to address this because you all are profiting handsomely [$2 million].”

Jake Paul: “Your team was the one that desired 12-oz gloves. I’m willing to go with eight,” Paul stated during today’s media event in Miami, Florida.

Trainer Calvin Ford: “I wasn’t informed of that detail, as I’m confident in his abilities.”

Transitioning to Ten-Ounce Gloves

Jake: “So, what are your preferences? 8 oz? 10-oz? What is your preference? The 12-oz request came from your side. So, what would you like, 10?”

Gervonta Davis: “I made no such statement. It holds no significance for me.”

Jake: “It’s inconsequential to him. Thus, we revert to my initial inclination, which is 10 ounces.”

Ford: “You’ve just clarified a point that was previously unknown to me. You compete with 10s, while he competes with 8s.”

Jake: “10 ounces it is, then. Excellent. This will undoubtedly heighten the excitement for the spectators. I strongly favored the use of 10s.”
