Deshaun Watson Fires Back at Booing Browns Fans: ‘It’s Disrespectful’

Although his play against the Bills did little to boost his standing in the quarterback competition with Shedeur Sanders, Deshaun Watson probably damaged his position even further during his media session after the game when discussing the jeers from Cleveland supporters.

Following a performance where he completed only 5 of 12 passes for 36 yards with one interception in Cleveland’s 31-7 defeat by the Bills, Watson chose to push back aggressively when questioned regarding the crowd’s reaction.

“It is obvious to everyone that this is completely unrelated to how I play on the field,” Watson remarked. “It feels much more personal than that. Because of that, I view it as a sign of disrespect.”

Illustrating his point, Watson pointed out that Saturday was hardly the initial instance of him experiencing the hostility of the Cleveland faithful. He further mentioned that rival fanbases actually treat him with greater respect.

“The previous time I stepped onto this turf, I suffered a torn Achilles. Those very same fans celebrated my injury,” he noted. “How is that connected to on-field performance? Celebrating when an individual is injured, particularly in their own home venue, makes no sense.”

According to Watson, his encounters with Cleveland supporters are typically unfavorable only online or when playing at home. He had remained hopeful that his reception would improve, especially considering his community outreach efforts and his strenuous recovery to put himself back in the running for the starting quarterback role.

“I believed that being sidelined for two seasons, recovering from a pair of Achilles tendon ruptures, dedicating hours at the team facility, engaging with the local community, participating in local philanthropic initiatives, backing the franchise, interacting positively with fans in public, and showing my true personality and integrity would make a difference,” he explained. “Evidently, it has not. That is why I view this as a personal matter. It is what it is. Individuals will believe what they want, and you can only do so much to alter their perceptions. Ultimately, I must focus on my preparation and work on maintaining a strong mental outlook as I move forward.”

Saturday’s game served as another chapter in the ongoing decline of Watson’s career, a trend that has defined his tenure in Cleveland since 2022. Once a three-time Pro Bowl selection during his time in Houston, Watson has seen his Browns career derailed by physical setbacks and erratic play. Across 19 starts with the franchise, he has compiled a 9-10 record, throwing for merely 19 touchdowns against 12 interceptions while registering a subpar completion rate of 61.2%.

Heightening the disappointment surrounding Watson’s time in Cleveland is the massive haul of assets the organization surrendered to acquire him. The Browns traded six draft selections to the Texans, among them three straight first-round picks, and handed Watson an unprecedented, fully guaranteed five-year contract worth $230 million. This deal is widely regarded as one of—if not absolutely the—most disastrous acquisitions in sports history.

Furthermore, Cleveland pursued and finalized the trade for Watson even though he was facing civil lawsuits from more than 24 female massage therapists alleging sexual assault and harassment (by 2022, confidential settlements had been resolved with 20 of the 24 plaintiffs). Consequently, Watson’s career with the Browns commenced with a league-mandated 11-game suspension for breaching the NFL’s personal conduct guidelines.

Compounding Watson’s challenges is the reality that his primary competition comes in the form of the highly favored Sanders. The former rookie Pro Bowler completed 9 of 11 passing attempts for 74 yards, throwing one touchdown and throwing one interception in the matchup against Buffalo. Sanders also handled himself exceptionally well in his post-game media session when questioned about how the crowd treated Watson.

“It is vital for everyone to remember our shared humanity,” he commented. “I strive not to treat others in a way I would find objectionable if directed at me. … To our supporters, I am grateful for your attendance and backing. No matter your perspective on Deshaun’s situation, I believe this transcends mere respect. Yet, that basic level of respect ought to exist. We are giving our maximum effort to represent this team well. Each week, we leave everything on the field, and I do not agree with that kind of treatment.”

As previously mentioned, Watson’s actions during and after Saturday’s contest did not help his reputation. Even though his stint with the franchise seems bound to go down as a historic failure, Watson remains hopeful about his future on the football field.

“I harbor no regrets about my path,” he stated. “I trust that God places us in specific circumstances with purpose. I hold zero regrets. Although I envisioned a different outcome, things are as they are. Eventually, situations shift, and because of my faith, I have the patience to await that transition. I am not worried.”
