Djokovic Demands More Grand Slam Prize Money for Tennis.

The tennis star clarified that his intention isn’t to gain more for himself, but rather to support players with lower rankings who depend on Grand Slam events.

“I’ve noticed in the past that when I discuss this subject, people tend to assume, ‘oh, he’s just seeking more money for himself’. That’s not the case,” stated the player with 24 Grand Slam titles.

“I’m simply referring to the bigger picture. Not many tennis players globally are able to make a living from this sport. I don’t think that’s been discussed enough.”

“It’s also crucial to acknowledge that we exist in a highly commercial environment. Entertainment and sports are major industries.”

“And Grand Slams are performing exceptionally well. The US Open, for example, has increased its prize money, and other Slams are following suit. But they also have higher revenues compared to the previous year.”

“Then there’s the factor of inflation, which is a separate issue but important to consider when discussing these matters.”

“Overall, it’s undoubtedly a positive development.”

Earlier this year, the Professional Tennis Players’ Association (PTPA) initiated legal proceedings against tennis’ regulatory organizations, alleging “anti-competitive practices and a clear lack of concern for player well-being.”

The lawsuit by the players’ association, which Djokovic helped establish, aimed to eliminate what it perceives as “monopolistic control” over the tennis tour, as well as to seek financial reparations from the ATP, the WTA, the International Tennis Federation (ITF), and the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA).

Djokovic later commented that “there are aspects of the lawsuit that I agree with, and there are also aspects that I don’t agree with.”

Djokovic will commence his US Open journey on Sunday against American Learner Tien at Arthur Ashe Stadium in Queens, New York City.
