PORTLAND, Ore. — According to Milwaukee Bucks head coach Doc Rivers, speaking on Wednesday from Portland, Oregon, superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo, a ten-time All-Star, continues to be unavailable for play due to a left knee issue, having missed five consecutive matchups.
Rivers commented, stating, “His recovery is moving forward,” but added, “He is simply not yet fit to play.”
The discussion surrounding Antetokounmpo’s current condition has become entangled with controversies concerning intentional losing and the league’s athlete availability rules. The Bucks have experienced a downturn, losing eleven of their last fourteen contests, significantly diminishing their prospects for postseason qualification.
On Tuesday, the National Basketball Players Association (NBPA) released an official communication that seemed directed at the Bucks organization. This declaration was issued in the wake of various accounts suggesting Antetokounmpo’s eagerness to return to the court.
“The Player Participation Policy was established by the league to enforce team responsibility and guarantee that an All-Star caliber player such as Giannis Antetokounmpo, once deemed fit and prepared for competition, actively participates in games,” the union’s statement asserted. It further noted, “Regrettably, regulations against tanking prove efficacious only to the extent of their implementation; spectators, media collaborators, and the fundamental honesty of the sport itself will endure adverse effects as long as team management operates without proper scrutiny.”
Prior to Wednesday evening’s matchup with the Portland Trail Blazers, Coach Rivers explicitly stated that Antetokounmpo’s absence was not a matter of the team deliberately benching him. The two-time NBA Most Valuable Player sustained his knee injury during the third quarter of a contest against the Indiana Pacers on March 15.
Rivers declared, “Our sole objective is to ensure Giannis achieves full recovery and is deemed medically fit. That remains our singular priority. We disregard all external discussions.”
The team has suffered three defeats in their last four games played in Antetokounmpo’s absence, with his current status attributed to a hyperextended left knee and an associated bone bruise. A specific date for his comeback has not yet been established.
