On the inaugural day of VCT Threshold China, Dragon Ranger Gaming secured a 2-0 victory against Rare Atom. This win supports their aspirations to regain entry into the league via one of the 2027 slots available at the event.
Commencing at 12:00 UK time, the best-of-three clash for Week 1 took place at THE HUB Performing Arts Center, which will host the event running through to November 1.
The outcome defied expectations based on rankings. Dragon Ranger Gaming held an Elo rating of 1461, positioning them 208th with a record of 49 wins and 54 losses across 103 rated matches. In contrast, Rare Atom was ranked 74th with a rating of 1622, boasting a 22-11 record in 33 matches.
In the veto phase, Rare Atom opted for Summit, while Dragon Ranger Gaming selected Lotus. Sunset was on the table as a potential decider but was ultimately unnecessary. It took Dragon Ranger Gaming 46 minutes to conquer Summit, followed by 48 minutes to wrap up on Lotus.
A guest slot is the pathway back into VCT China
For Dragon Ranger Gaming, the pressure is intense. Previously holding a guest slot in VCT China, they were not selected as one of the region’s partners for 2027-2028, as reported by Sheep Esports. In that cycle, VCT China will comprise eight partner teams instead of ten. Four teams, including FunPlus Phoenix, Nova Esports, Titan Esports Club, and Wolves Esports, have lost their partner status.
The transition from Valorant Challengers to Threshold marks a pivotal change in China, culminating the Nationals season. The upcoming 2027 China Kickoff will feature eight partner squads, along with two guest teams and two teams emerging from the Open Qualifier.
The Week 1 bracket is populated by five teams from VCT China, accompanied by seven national squads. The champion of this segment will earn a place in VCT China for 2027. Week 1 action spans from October 21 to 25, utilizing a single-elimination best-of-three format, followed by Week 2, which is set for October 27 to November 1.
Rare Atom, however, still has a chance. Teams that lose in Week 1 will move into a playoff during Week 2, alongside an additional national team.
This victory concludes a challenging run ahead of Threshold
This sweep came after a difficult period for Dragon Ranger Gaming. Their last match resulted in a 0-2 defeat against Any Questions Gaming in the China Evolution Series Act 3 of 2026. Prior to that, they faced defeats of 1-2 at the hands of both Trace Esports and TEC Esports during VCT China Stage 2 in 2026, although they did secure victories against Wolves Esports and JD Gaming, both ending in 2-1.
This win also mirrored their last encounter with Rare Atom, where Dragon Ranger Gaming triumphed with a 3-0 scoreline during VCT Ascension China 2025 on October 19, 2025. Rare Atom arrived in Shanghai following a 0-2 loss to JD Gaming in the China Evolution Series Act 1 of 2026.
The remaining first-round contests also concluded with clean sweeps. Unsettled Resentment overwhelmed Octagonal Disposition Gaming with a 2-0 scoreline. Any Questions Gaming triumphed over World Sports Invictus Gaming also by 2-0. Meanwhile, Wolves Esports, one of the four teams that lost their partner status, handily defeated A Team 2-0.
Looking ahead, Dragon Ranger Gaming’s next challenge will be against FunPlus Phoenix on Friday, October 23. The semi-finals for Week 1 are slated for October 24, with the finals of Week 1 taking place on October 25.
