Ennis vs. Murtazaliev: Warns of Counter-Punch Power at 154.

Trainer Stephen Edwards suggests Bakhram Murtazaliev presents the greatest challenge at 154 pounds for Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis because of his proficiency in “counter-punching.” He points out that Ennis’s inclination towards an attacking style could expose him against IBF junior middleweight titleholder Murtazaliev (23-0, 17 KOs).

Ennis’ promoter, Eddie Hearn, identified Bakhram as a potential future opponent. He desires ‘Boots’ (35-0, 31 KOs) to secure titles at 154 pounds to set up a match with Terence Crawford.

The Danger Bakhram Poses

“Bakhram is the most dangerous due to his counter-punching skills, and ‘Boots’ tends to be quite aggressive. While ‘Boots’ has demonstrated resilience thus far, anyone is vulnerable with the right hit,” Stephen Edwards conveyed to MillCity Boxing regarding Bakhram Murtazaliev being the foremost threat to Jaron Ennis at 154.

A Potentially Perilous Match at 154 Pounds

The 154-pound division includes powerful hitters, but Murtazaliev is unparalleled. His exceptional danger stems from the swiftness of his whipping left hook, making it difficult to anticipate.

Ennis would need to adopt a more cautious approach against Bakhram than he typically employs, as he would face a constant barrage of left hook counters. If he absorbs as many blows as he did in his second encounter with Karen Chukhadzhian on November 9, 2024, he risks being knocked out. Karen consistently landed shots on Ennis, creating a negative impression in front of his Philadelphia supporters at the Wells Fargo Center.

Bakhram’s Single-Shot Accuracy

“Bakhram showcased a formidable left hook, demonstrating quick thinking with a single shot. He lacks overall speed during exchanges. Observe his bout with Tszyu, focusing on that particular hook—that precise catch-and-counter. His speed is evident in that single shot, indicating extensive practice,” Edwards remarked concerning Murtazaliev.

Tim Tszyu repeatedly suffered from Bakhram’s powerful left hook during their contest on October 19, 2024, resulting in four knockdowns. Although Murtazaliev’s right hand is typically a key weapon, it was reportedly compromised, forcing him to rely more heavily on his left hook.

Required Adjustments for Ennis to Secure Victory

Ennis cannot afford to fight as aggressively against Bakhram as he did in his first-round knockout of Uisma Lima. Attempting a similar flurry could expose him to a counter. Even while hurt, Lima sought opportunities to land on ‘Boots.’ Ennis risks being caught if he engages in overly aggressive tactics against Murtazaliev.
