The EuroBasket 2025 tournament began on Wednesday, showcasing 24 national teams and a host of NBA players vying for the title of European men’s basketball champion. The competition is unfolding across the four host nations: Cyprus, Finland, Poland, and Latvia. The elimination rounds, including the third-place contest and the championship match, will be staged in Riga, Latvia, come September. Spain, the current titleholder, aims to retain its championship after defeating France in the 2022 tournament’s final.
The EuroBasket 2025 event is rich with prominent players. Luka Dončić is representing his native Slovenia, while Nikola Jokić, a three-time NBA MVP, is spearheading Serbia, the squad expected to win the tournament. Giannis Antetokounmpo is once again playing for Greece. A number of other NBA talents such as Kristaps Porziņģis from Latvia, Franz Wagner — who was instrumental in Germany securing a bronze medal in 2022 — alongside a collection of young, talented French players including Zaccharie Risacher, Alexandre Sarr and Bilal Coulibaly are other significant figures to keep an eye on. Victor Wembanyama of France, however, will not participate in EuroBasket after his NBA campaign was prematurely ended due to a blood clot in February.
As the competition gets underway, here’s what you need to be aware of:
Structure
The competition begins with a preliminary group phase, consisting of four groups, each containing six teams. The group stage employs a round-robin system, where each team faces every other team in their respective group once. Teams are awarded two points for a victory and one point for a defeat. Upon completion of the group stage, the top four teams from each group proceed to the knockout phase. In the event of a points tie between two teams at the conclusion of the group phase, the results of their direct encounter will serve as the initial tiebreaker. The secondary tiebreaker will be the point difference, succeeded by the total points scored, if required.
