F1 Qatar GP: Max Stint Length Return Considered

Teams participating in Formula 1, along with the FIA and tyre manufacturer Pirelli, are contemplating implementing a maximum duration for stints during the forthcoming Qatar Grand Prix. This measure aims to prevent a recurrence of the tyre-related incidents witnessed in 2024, potentially mandating that teams execute a minimum of two pit stops if the proposal gains approval.

The Qatar race, hosted at the Losail circuit known for its high-downforce demands, has faced challenges with tyre performance in recent times. In 2023, restrictions were imposed on stint lengths, limiting them to 18 laps, due to apprehensions regarding the potential damage to tyres caused by Losail’s distinct ‘pyramid’ style kerbs, which led to sidewall separation.

Ahead of last year’s competition, these kerbs underwent a grinding process, mitigating their previous impact. However, concerns persisted regarding the substantial degree of what is termed volumetric wear. Volumetric wear signifies the physical deterioration and reduction in volume of the tyre, diminishing the compound’s capacity to adequately safeguard the underlying carcass and elevating the likelihood of punctures. During the previous year’s race, both Lewis Hamilton and Carlos Sainz experienced punctures as a consequence.

The high-speed corners characteristic of Losail tend to exert considerable stress on the front-left tyre. Furthermore, the limited thermal degradation enables drivers to maintain intense pushing, resulting in the physical wearing down of the tyres without significant compromise to performance.

Pirelli, the designated tyre provider, has affirmed that discussions are underway to avert a recurrence of similar incidents during this year’s event in late November. One potential solution being considered involves reinstating a mandated stint length, compelling teams to undertake at least two pit stops.

“We are still in the process of deliberation,” stated Simone Berra, an engineer at Pirelli. “We are engaging in conversations with the FIA, the teams, and F1 management, and we anticipate reaching a decision imminently. As of now, no official determination has been made.”

“We possess insights from previous years’ experiences. Two years prior, the primary concern revolved around kerbs. In the preceding year, the focus shifted to elevated wear, particularly volumetric wear. This phenomenon led to some compromise of the carcass integrity. Consequently, we are factoring in all pertinent variables. The structure has not undergone substantial modifications in terms of its inherent resistance.”

“Our objective is to prevent a repetition of the circumstances observed last year, wherein teams were capable of prolonging their stints due to minimal performance degradation, even while operating on the under-thread. Thus, we are assessing the array of options at our disposal and will arrive at a decision in the near future.”

Berra corroborated that a maximum stint length “is under consideration”.
