Falcons Sign DT Gervon Dexter to 4-Year, $78M Extension

An agreement has been finalized between the Atlanta Falcons and their newly acquired defensive tackle.

On Wednesday, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that Gervon Dexter and the Falcons locked in a four-year contract extension worth $78 million. Under the terms of the agreement, $46.5 million is fully guaranteed. Atlanta’s front office officially announced the signing later that same day.

“Gervon represents a rising, youthful force whose strength, disruptive capabilities, and presence upfront are rare assets,” Falcons general manager Ian Cunningham stated. “Equally remarkable is his maturity outside of football, developing significantly as an individual and a parent. We deeply appreciate his enthusiasm for football and his dedication to this roster, making us thrilled to secure him as a cornerstone of our defensive unit for the future. My gratitude also goes out to Drew and Jason Rosenhaus for their collaborative efforts and dialogue during these negotiations.”

Atlanta acquired Dexter via a trade with the Chicago Bears in the preceding month. In their effort to strengthen their front line ahead of the regular season, the Falcons traded away cornerback Clark Phillips along with a future fifth-round selection to obtain the defender.

The defensive tackle was playing out the last season of his initial four-year, $6.7 million rookie contract, which he agreed to after Chicago drafted him out of Florida in 2023 with the 53rd overall selection. Without this extension, he was on track to enter free agency in the upcoming offseason.

Despite having played only three matchups in his new uniform, Dexter has swiftly convinced the franchise of his value. Over his first trio of games this year, he has accumulated seven combined tackles alongside half a sack.

Given that the trade transpired just a short time ago, it is apparent that Chicago was not prepared to offer Dexter a contract of this magnitude. This new deal elevates him into the ranks of the top 15 highest-earning interior defensive linemen across the NFL. While Chris Jones of the Kansas City Chiefs remains at the top of that financial bracket with a $158.7 million contract, Dexter’s compensation now closely mirrors that of Philadelphia Eagles lineman Jordan Davis.

Following their initial victory of the year—a dominant 35-14 away win against the Green Bay Packers on Thursday night—the Falcons are set to square off against the New Orleans Saints in their Week 4 matchup.
