‘Fighter’ Kartal stuns Keys in Indian Wells comeback

Kartal declared her intention to focus on recuperating her back injury prior to her upcoming encounter in the round of 16 against Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan, who is the current Australian Open titleholder.

“My back posed a significant obstacle,” Kartal further stated.

“I largely refrained from practice yesterday to allow for maximum recovery, therefore I believe the current priority is to regain full fitness and repeat that process to return to competitive play within the next few days.”

Kartal was not the sole competitor to achieve an unexpected victory via a rally from behind on Monday.

Katerina Siniakova, ranked 44th globally from the Czech Republic, eliminated the incumbent champion and Russian eighth seed Mirra Andreeva in an arduous match, securing a 4-6 7-6 (7-5) 6-3 triumph over two hours and 48 minutes.

Concurrently, the third-seeded player Rybakina secured her place in the fourth round by achieving a hard-earned 6-4 6-4 success against Marta Kostyuk of Ukraine.

Iga Swiatek, currently ranked second globally and the current Wimbledon title holder, defeated Maria Sakkari from Greece; simultaneously, the fifth-seeded American Jessica Pegula rallied after losing the first set against Jelena Ostapenko to advance to the round of 16.
